Abstract

The invention comprises an X-ray tomography method and apparatus used in conjunction with multi-axis charged particle or proton beam radiation therapy of cancerous tumors. In various embodiments, 3-D images are generated from a series of 2-D X-rays images; the X-ray source and detector are stationary while the patient rotates; the 2-D X-ray images are generated using an X-ray source proximate a charged particle beam in a charged particle cancer therapy system; and the X-ray tomography system uses an electron source having a geometry that enhances an electron source lifetime, where the electron source is used in generation of X-rays. The X-ray tomography system is optionally used in conjunction with systems used to both move and constrain movement of the patient, such as semi-vertical, sitting, or laying positioning systems. The X-ray images are optionally used in control of a charged particle cancer therapy system.

Claims

1. An apparatus for acquiring a three-dimensional image of at least a tumor in a patient, said apparatus comprising:

a synchrotron;

an X-ray source;

a platform configured to support the patient, said platform comprising multi-axis computer control of;

a vertical position of said platform; and

a rotation position of said platform,

wherein at least a portion of said platform comprises a position, said position under an about horizontal beam path, during use said beam path comprising at least one of;

protons extracted from said synchrotron; and

X-rays from said X-ray source, wherein said x-ray source is physically positioned less than one hundred millimeters from said protons extracted from said synchrotron during use, said protons running along a proton beam path,

said platform configured to rotate, under computer control, to at least ten rotation positions over at least one hundred eighty degrees of rotation during a tumor imaging period, and

wherein said control of position positions the tumor in the about horizontal beam path during use.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said X-ray source maintains a single static position during acquisition of data used in creating said three dimensional image.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a rotational reamer configured to adjust said rotation position of said platform at a rate in excess of ninety degrees per minute simultaneous with a period of acquisition of data for imaging the tumor.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, said synchrotron configured for use within less than ten seconds from use of said X-ray source.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, said synchrotron configured to simultaneously vary energy and intensity of protons in said proton beam path.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, said X-ray source configured within twenty millimeters of the about horizontal beam path of the protons extracted from said synchrotron.

7. An apparatus for positioning a patient for imaging of a tumor with X-rays, comprising:

a statically positioned X-ray source;

a lower support unit;

at least one patient positioning device, said lower support unit supporting said patient positioning device, said at least one patient positioning device further comprising;

a semi-upright patient support surface, said semi-upright patient support surface reclined from a vertical axis by less than sixty-five degrees, said semi-upright support surface configured to constrain movement of the patient during delivery of the X-rays; and

means for rotating said lower support unit about an about vertical axis to a plurality of rotation positions,

wherein said plurality of rotation positions comprises at least five computer controlled rotation positions in a period of less than two minutes during imaging of the tumor by the X-rays, said X-ray source configured to deliver the X-rays along an about horizontal axis over a portion of said lower support unit.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, further comprising motors configured to adjust at least one rotation position of said lower support unit and vertical position of said lower support unit during delivery of charged particles from a synchrotron.

9. The apparatus of claim 7, further comprising:

an upper support unit mechanically connected to said lower support unit, said means for rotating rotates said lower support unit in synchronization with said upper support unit.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, further comprising:

a first thermal resistor held by said upper support unit, said first thermal resistor configured in an exhalation path of the patient;

a second thermal resistor configured to sense environmental temperature out of the exhalation path; and

a controller using at least one reading from said first thermal resistor and said second thermal resistor to determine a respiration cycle of the patient,

wherein said controller controls delivery of the X-rays from said X-ray source in phase with said respiration cycle.

11. The apparatus of claim 9, further comprising:

a motor for adjusting a distance between said lower support unit and said upper support unit.

12. The apparatus of claim 7, further comprising:

a synchrotron; and

means for vertically adjusting said lower support unit, wherein said means for vertically adjusting adjusts the tumor of the patient to overlap protons extracted from said synchrotron, wherein during use the protons travel along a beam path substantially parallel to an X-ray path covered by said X-rays.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising independent control of all of:

a vertical position of said rotatable platform;

a rotation position of said rotatable platform;

energy of the protons; and

intensity of the protons, wherein delivery of the protons comprises repeated delivery correlated with the patient'"'"'s respiration cycle and in coordination with rotation of the patient on said rotatable platform during said plurality of rotation positions.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein said control of intensity comprises control through use of a feedback control using a current generated by the protons transmitting through a foil in an extraction process of the charged particles at said energy.

15. A method for positioning a patient for imaging of a tumor with X-rays, comprising the steps of:

supporting the patient on a platform;

supporting the patient on a semi-upright patient support surface held by said platform, said semi-upright patient support surface reclined from a vertical axis by less than sixty-five degrees, said semi-upright support surface configured to constrain movement of the patient during delivery of the X-rays;

computer controlling at least one of a vertical position of said platform and a rotation position of said platform, wherein at least a portion of said platform comprises a position under an about horizontal beam path of the X-rays originating at an X-ray source;

rotating said platform, under computer control, to at least ten rotation positions over at least about one hundred eighty degrees of rotation during an X-ray imaging period;

detecting X-rays transmitted through the patient with a detector; and

generating an image of the tumor using signal observed with said detector.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising the step of:

using said X-ray image in adjusting at least one of said rotation position and said vertical position simultaneous with delivery of charged particles from a synchrotron.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising the step of:

circumferentially distributing ingress energy of the charged particles to at least ten areas circumferentially distributed about the tumor corresponding to said at least ten rotation positions.

18. The method of claim 16, further comprising the step of:

simultaneously varying at least one of energy and intensity of the charged particles during said step of rotating.

19. The method of claim 16, further comprising the steps of:

controlling energy of the charged particles;

controlling intensity of the charged particles; and

delivering the charged particles at a repeating period, said period correlated to a rhythmic pattern of the patient'"'"'s respiration cycle.

20. The method of claim 16, further comprising the steps of:

collecting multi-field images of the tumor in the patient;

developing a tumor irradiation plan;

repositioning the tumor using said platform; and

irradiating the tumor with the charged particles in each of said at least ten rotation positions.

21. The method of claim 16, further comprising the steps of:

controlling energy of the charged particles using a magnetic field in a bending magnet of said synchrotron, said bending magnet comprising;

a tapered iron based core adjacent a gap, said core comprising a surface polish of less than ten microns average roughness; and

a focusing geometry comprising;

a first cross-sectional distance of said iron based core forming an edge of said gap, and

a second cross-sectional distance of said iron based core not in contact with said gap, wherein said second cross-sectional distance comprises a length at least fifty percent larger than said first cross-sectional distance, said first cross-sectional distance running parallel with said second cross-sectional distance.

22. The method of claim 16, further comprising the step of:

varying intensity of the charged particles dependent upon efficiency of delivery of energy of the charged particles within the tumor versus delivery of energy of the charged particles to healthy tissue of the patient.

23. The method of claim 16, further comprising the step of:

accelerating the charged particles in a charged particle circulation beam path running about a center of said synchrotron, said charged particle circulation beam path comprising;

straight sections; and

turning sections,

wherein each of said turning sections comprises a plurality of bending magnets,

wherein said circulation beam path comprises a length of less than sixty meters, and

wherein a number of said straight sections equals a number of said turning sections.

24. The method of claim 15, further comprising the steps of:

using a thermal resistor configured in an exhalation path of the patient to establish a respiration pattern of the patient; and

delivering the X-rays from said X-ray source in phase with said respiration pattern.
