1. A method of surgically implanting an implantable subcutaneous defibrillator having one or more lead electrode assemblies and a canister in a patient comprising:
- implanting the canister in a pectoral location, above and to the left of the heart under the collarbone on the anterior chest of the patient;
subcutaneously implanting a first lead electrode assembly having a first electrode such that the first electrode is implanted in a position generally parallel to and adjacent the sternum on the anterior chest of the patient;
without using fluoroscopy to implant the subcutaneous defibrillator; and
coupling the canister and the first lead electrode assembly.
