Abstract

Residual magnetic locks, brakes, rotation inhibitors, clutches, actuators, and latches. The residual magnetic devices can include a core housing and an armature. The residual magnetic devices can include a coil that receives a magnetization current to create an irreversible residual magnetic force between the core housing and the armature.

Claims

1. A controller for an apparatus including a core housing, a coil, and an armature, the controller comprising:

an electrical circuit connected to the coil to

(i) provide a magnetization current to the coil to create an irreversible residual magnetic force with a residual magnetic air gap energy of at least 6700 (line−

amp−

turn)/cm³ between the armature and the core housing to couple the armature and the core housing; and

to

(ii) stop supplying the magnetization current to the coil, wherein the armature and the core housing remain coupled by the irreversible residual magnetic force when the magnetization current is no longer provided.

2. The controller of claim 1, wherein the electrical circuit is configured to provide a demagnetization current to the coil to null the irreversible residual magnetic force.

3. The controller of claim 1, further comprising a second electrical circuit connected to the coil to provide a demagnetization current to the coil to null the irreversible residual magnetic force.

4. The controller of claim 1, wherein the irreversible residual magnetic force substantially prevents a force from overcoming at least one detent between the armature and the core housing.

5. The controller of claim 1, further comprising a processor, wherein the processor is configured to cause the magnetization current to be provided to the coil through the electrical circuit.

6. The controller of claim 1, further comprising at least one sensor configured to determine whether the irreversible residual magnetic force is present between the core housing and the armature.

7. The controller of claim 6, wherein the at least one sensor includes a Hall effect sensor.

8. The controller of claim 6, wherein the at least one sensor includes a strain gauge.

9. The controller of claim 6, wherein the at least one sensor includes a switch.

10. The controller of claim 1, wherein the electrical circuit provides a second magnetization current to the coil before providing a demagnetization current to the current to null the irreversible residual magnetic force.

11. A method of controlling an apparatus having a core housing, a coil, and a armature, the method comprising:

providing a magnetization current to the coil to create an irreversible residual magnetic force with a residual magnetic air gap energy of at least 6700 (line-amp-turn)/cm³ between the armature and the core housing to couple the armature and the core housing; and

stopping supply of the magnetization current to the coil; and

retaining the armature and the core housing in a coupled relationship by the irreversible residual magnetic force when the magnetization current is no longer provided.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising providing a demagnetization current to the coil to null the irreversible residual magnetic force.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the irreversible residual magnetic force substantially prevents a force from overcoming at least one detent between the armature and the core housing.

14. The method of claim 11, further comprising determining whether the irreversible residual magnetic force is present between the core housing and the armature.

15. An apparatus comprising:

a core housing;

an armature;

a coil positioned in the core housing; and

a controller configured to

(i) provide a magnetization current to the coil to create an irreversible residual magnetic force with a residual magnetic air gap energy of at least 6700 (line−

amp−

turn)/cm³ between the armature and the core housing to couple the armature and the core housing; and

to

(ii) stop supplying the magnetization current to the coil, wherein the armature and the core housing remain coupled by the irreversible residual magnetic force when the magnetization current is no longer provided by the controller.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the controller is further configured to provide a demagnetization current to the coil to null the irreversible residual magnetic force.

17. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the controller includes a processor.
