Abstract

A microtunnelling apparatus and system that includes an external drive system having rotational and linear thrust drive means, a drill head section having drill rotor and drill rod and connecting to intermediate drill rods allowing extension of the boring hole created by the drill head section driven by the drive system. The drill head includes a modular construction having a plurality of circular disc like elements, a bearing module, a steering module, a spacer module, and a mounting module, for axial alignment and abutment and mounting within a cylindrical steering shell. Directional steering of the drill head includes a plurality of substantially radially extending channels in steering module, each with an hydraulically movable protuberance movable by control means to redirect the outer steering casing and thereby redirect the drill head section mounted on the distal end of the drill rods.

Claims

1. A backreaming apparatus comprising:

a plurality of intermediate drill rods configured to connect together to form a string of intermediate drill rod units, each intermediate drill rod unit including a drive shaft rotatably mounted within a casing assembly, the casing assemblies of the intermediate drill rod units being connected together by connections that allow a pull-back load to be transferred through the casing assemblies of the intermediate drill rod units, and the drive shafts of the intermediate drill rod units being connected by connections that allow torque to be transferred through the string of intermediate drill rod units;

a backreamer having a rearwardly facing cutting face positioned adjacent to and facing a first end of the string of intermediate drill rod units; and

an external drive positioned at a second end of the string of drill rod units for applying a pull-back load to the string of intermediate drill rod units and for applying torque to the string of intermediate drill rod units, the torque being transferred to the backreamer by the drive shafts of the intermediate drill rod units and the pull-back load being transferred to the backreamer by the casing assemblies of the intermediate drill rod units, wherein the intermediate drill rod units define a vacuum channel for removing slurry from a hole being backreamed, the vacuum channel having an inlet adjacent the backreamer and an outlet connected to a source of vacuum.

2. The backreaming apparatus of claim 1, wherein the torque is transferred from the drive shafts to a backreamer cutter hub by a drive gear that rotates a plurality of planetary gears.

3. The backreaming apparatus of claim 2, wherein the planetary gears have rotation points that are mounted to a thrust plate that is fixed relative to the casing assemblies of the intermediate drill rod units.

4. The backreaming apparatus of claim 3, wherein a cylindrical pipe attachment housing is connected to the thrust plate.

5. The backreaming apparatus of claim 1, wherein the backreamer includes a cutter hub having a cutting face that is concave and configured to offer spoils to the inlet of the vacuum channel.

6. The backreaming apparatus of claim 1, wherein the casing assemblies of the intermediate drill rod units do not rotate as the backreamer is rotated by the drive shafts.

The backreaming apparatus of claim 1, wherein the casing assemblies include outer cylindrical portions adapted to support the hole being backreamed, wherein the casing assemblies define first and second separate axial channels that extend though the string of intermediate drill rod units and are fully enclosed within the casing assemblies.

8. The backreaming apparatus of claim 7, wherein the casing assemblies include end plates positioned at first and second ends of the casing assemblies, and wherein the drive shafts are rotatably retained within the end plates by bearings.

The backreaming apparatus of claim 8, wherein the end plates define alignment holes offset from center axes of the intermediate drill rod units, wherein the intermediate drill rod units also include projections that project axially outwardly from the end plates and that axially slide into the alignment holes of adjacent intermediate drill rod units to provide rotational alignment between the adjacent intermediate drill rod units.

The backreaming apparatus of claim 9, wherein the intermediate drill rod units include latches positioned adjacent the alignment holes for engaging the axial projections to retain the axial projections within the alignment holes, and wherein interaction between the axial projections and the latches allows the pull-back load to be transferred through the casing assemblies of the intermediate drill rod units.

11. The backreaming apparatus of claim 1, wherein the casing assemblies define axially extending cavities having outwardly facing open sides that extend along lengths of the casing assemblies.

The backreaming apparatus of claim 1, wherein the casing assemblies of the intermediate drill rod units are aligned by male and female structures that are offset from center axes of the intermediate drill rod units and that mate together when the intermediate drill rod units are moved axially together in an end-to end relationship, wherein the intermediate drill rod units also include latches that engage the male structures when axially inserted into the female structures, and wherein interaction between the latches and the males structures allows the pull-back load to be transferred axially through the casing assemblies of the intermediate drill rod units.

The backreaming apparatus of claim 12, wherein each of the casing assemblies defines first and second axially extending cavities that extend from a first end to a second end of each of the intermediate drill rod units, and wherein the male and female structures ensure alignment of the first cavities and also ensure alignment of the second cavities when the intermediate drill rod units are interconnected.

14. The backreaming apparatus of claim 12, wherein the male structures include pins and the female structures include sockets.

The backreaming apparatus of claim 1, wherein the intermediate drill rod units define a central axis, wherein the drive shafts are aligned along the central axis, wherein the casing assemblies are also aligned along the central axis, wherein the casing assemblies define cavities that extend axially though the casing assemblies at a location offset from the central axis, wherein the intermediate drill rod units include axial projections that project axially outwardly from first ends of the casing assemblies at locations offset from the central axis, the intermediate drill rod units also including projection receivers in second ends of the casing assemblies at locations offset from the central axis, the axial projections being axially received within the projection receivers to provide alignment between the cavities of adjacent intermediate drill rod units.

16. The backreaming apparatus of claim 15, wherein at least two axial projections are provided at each of the first ends of the intermediate drill rod units and at least two projection receivers are provided at each of the second ends of the intermediate drill rod units.

17. The backreaming apparatus of claim 16, wherein the axial projections at the first ends of the intermediate drill rod units are separated by about 180 degrees, and the projection receivers at the second ends of the intermediate drill rod units are separated by about 180 degrees.

The backreaming apparatus of claim 15, further comprising latches provided at the second ends of the intermediate drill rod units for retaining the axial projections within the projection receivers and for allowing the pull-back load to be transferred axially between the adjacent intermediate drill rod units.

19. A method for installing product comprising:

drilling a hole by pushing a rotatable cutting face through the ground by progressively adding drill rod units to a string of drill rod units, wherein each of the drill rod units includes an outer casing assembly for transferring thrust to the cutting face and inner drive shafts for transferring torque to the cutting face;

monitoring a direction of the string of drill rod units using a laser directed through the string of drill rod units to a target located adjacent the cutting face;

after the hole has been drilled, replacing the cutting face with a backreamer; and

enlarging the hole by pulling the backreamer back through the hole with the casing assemblies while applying torque to the backreamer with the drive shafts.

20. The method for installing product of claim 19, further comprising attaching product behind the backreamer and pulling the product into the hole as the hole is backreamed.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the product is pipe having a diameter less than 600 millimeters.

22. The method of claim 20, further comprising using vacuum to evacuate slurry through the string of drill rod units during drilling of the hole and during backreaming of the hole.

23. A backreaming apparatus including a distal end configured for connection to product and a proximal end configured for attachment to a distal end of a drill string, the backreaming apparatus comprising:

backreaming cutting elements having cutting sides that face toward the proximal end of the backreaming apparatus;

a proximal assembly that extends between the proximal end of the backreaming apparatus and the backreaming cutting elements, the proximal assembly defining a vacuum passage for removing material cut by the backreaming cutting elements, the proximal assembly being configured to be attached to the drill string adapted to pull the backreaming apparatus through a previously drilled hole;

a drive stem for transferring torque to the backreaming cutting elements for driving the cutting elements about a longitudinal axis of the backreaming apparatus, the drive stem being rotatably supported within the proximal assembly; and

a distal assembly that extends between the backreaming cutting elements and the distal end of the backreaming apparatus, the distal assembly being configured to be attached to product desired to be pulled behind the backreaming apparatus into the hole during backreaming; and

a vacuum blocking plate positioned distally with respect to the backreaming cutting elements, the vacuum blocking plate having an outer diameter generally equal to an outer cutting diameter of the backreaming cutting elements.

The backreaming apparatus of claim 23, wherein the backreaming cutting elements are mounted on a proximal side of the vacuum blocking plate, and wherein the drive stem rotates the vacuum blocking plate about the longitudinal axis to drive the backreaming cutting elements about the longitudinal axis.
