Abstract
An apparatus is disclosed that allows for separating and collecting a fraction of a sample. The apparatus, when used with a centrifuge, allows for the creation of at least three fractions in the apparatus. It also provides for a new method of extracting the buffy coat phase from a whole blood sample. A buoy system that may include a first buoy portion and a second buoy member operably interconnected may be used to form at least three fractions from a sample during a substantially single centrifugation process. Therefore, the separation of various fractions may be substantially quick and efficient.

20. A method of separating a material including comprising:

providing a container defining an internal volume; positioning a separating member within the container, wherein the separating member includes a density to move to an interface of a first fraction and a second fraction of a first whole material and a third fraction and a fourth fraction of a second whole material, wherein the first whole material is different from the second whole material; the separation member being provided to form a physical barrier between a combination of the first fraction and the third fraction and a combination of the second fraction and the fourth fraction.
