1. A method to axially distract a first intervertebral space between a first vertebral body and a second vertebral body, comprising the steps:

  • implanting a first assembly in the first vertebral body through an access channel;

    implanting a second assembly in the second and more caudal vertebral body through the access channel; and

    using a rotating portion of the second assembly to contact a proximal end of the first assembly to push on the first assembly without rotating the first assembly to axially distract the first intervertebral space between the first vertebral body engaged with the first assembly and the second vertebral body engaged with second assembly.
