1. A traffic authentication system that authenticates remotely generated optical control signals from a vehicle, the traffic authentication system comprising:

  • a remote optical emitter coupled to a vehicle and configured to transmit an optical control signal from a remote location;

    a remote authentication device collocated with the remote optical emitter, the remote authentication device configured to receive a radio frequency authentication challenge signal and transmit a compatible authentication response signal in response to the challenge signal;

    an optical signal processor positioned at a traffic control location and configured to receive the optical control signal from the remote optical emitter and generate a control output signal in response to detection of a valid optical control signal; and

    a control authentication device coupled by a data communications link to the optical signal processor, the control authentication device configured to receive the control output signal from the optical signal processor, transmit the radio frequency authentication challenge signal to the remote authentication device in response to receipt of the control output signal, and generate an authenticated control output signal in response to receipt of a valid authentication response signal from the remote authentication device.
