Abstract

A measurement system may comprise a sensor wire and a transceiver unit. The sensor wire may comprise an insertable portion configured to be inserted in a blood vessel of a patient'"'"'s body and a sensor disposed within the insertable portion at a distal end of the sensor wire. The sensor is configured to measure a parameter when inserted inside the patient. The transceiver unit may comprise: a housing adapted to be connected to a proximal end of the sensor wire; and a first communication module within the housing adapted to wirelessly communicate by a communication signal with an external second communication module in order to transfer information to the external second communication module.

Claims

1. A measurement system, comprising:

a sensor wire comprising an insertable portion configured to be inserted in a blood vessel of a patient'"'"'s body and a sensor disposed within the insertable portion at a distal end of the sensor wire, wherein the sensor is configured to measure a parameter when inserted inside the patient; and

a transceiver unit, comprising;

a housing adapted to be connected to a proximal end of the sensor wire; and

a first communication module within the housing adapted to wirelessly communicate by a communication signal with an external second communication module in order to transfer information to the external second communication module,

wherein the communication signal, including sensor values, is generated by the transceiver unit and transferred as a data stream,

wherein the housing is configured to remain external to the patient'"'"'s body.

2. The measurement system according to claim 1, wherein said communication signal is a radio frequency signal.

3. The measurement system according to claim 2, wherein radio frequency communication is performed by Bluetooth.

4. The measurement system according to claim 2, wherein said radio frequency signal has a frequency of 2.4 GHz.

5. The measurement system according to claim 2, wherein radio frequency communication is performed by a frequency hopping technique.

6. The measurement system according to claim 1, wherein said data stream is in a form of data packets.

7. The measurement system according to claim 1, wherein the first communication module is configured to perform bi-directional communication with the second communication module.

8. The measurement system according to claim 1, wherein said communication signal is one of an infrared signal, an ultrasound signal, and a light signal.

9. The measurement system according to claim 1, wherein the transceiver unit further comprises an activator configured to activate and initialize the transceiver unit.

10. The measurement system according to claim 9, wherein the transceiver unit further comprises a female connector with electrical contact surfaces, and

wherein said activator activates and initializes the transceiver unit when electrical connections are established between the electrical contact surfaces of the female connector and electrical contact surfaces of a male connector at the proximal end of the sensor wire.

11. The measurement system according to claim 10, wherein said female connector comprises an insulating hollow housing containing a predetermined number of hollow contact surfaces to make contact with the electrical contact surfaces of the male connector.

12. The measurement system according to claim 1, wherein the transceiver unit further comprises a guide to guide the sensor wire during insertion into the patient.

The measurement system according to claim 1, wherein a sensor signal adapting circuitry is disposed within the housing and is adapted to filter, process, and format a signal received from the sensor wire, and wherein the sensor signal adapting circuitry within the housing comprises a calibrating section containing calibration data for the sensor wire.

14. The measurement system according to claim 13, wherein the calibrating section contains individual calibration data obtained during calibration of the sensor performed for each individual sensor wire.

15. The measurement system according to claim 14, wherein calibration is performed in connection with manufacture of the sensor wire.

16. The measurement system according to claim 1, further comprising a communication unit housing the second communication module, wherein the communication unit is adapted to wirelessly communicate with the transceiver unit via the second communication module.

17. The measurement system according to claim 16, further comprising a sensor signal adapting circuitry configured to filter, process, and format a signal received from the sensor wire.

18. The measurement system according to claim 17, wherein the sensor signal adapting circuitry is located within at least one of the housing, the communication unit, the sensor wire, or an external device adapted to be connected to the communication unit.

19. The measurement system according to claim 17, wherein the sensor signal adapting circuitry is partially located within one of the housing, the communication unit, the sensor wire, or an external device adapted to be connected to the communication unit.

20. The measurement system according to claim 17, wherein the sensor signal adapting circuitry is partially located within the housing and is partially located within the communication unit.

The measurement system according to claim 16, wherein the communication unit is adapted to be connected to a standard input/output connector of an external device to communicate in accordance with an established standard, or in accordance with relevant parts of an established standard, and wherein the established standard is one of a Universal Serial Bus or an ANSI/AAMI BP22-1994.

22. The measurement system according to claim 1, wherein the housing is configured as a handle for guiding the sensor wire during insertion into the patient and during use of the sensor wire.

The measurement system according to claim 1, wherein the sensor wire is configured to measure a physiological parameter, the information transferred from the first communication module to the second communication module is information related to the physiological parameter, and the sensor values are sensor values related to the physiological parameter.

24. The measurement system according to claim 23, wherein the physiological parameter is one or more of a pressure inside the patient, a temperature inside the patient, and a blood flow inside the patient.

The measurement system according to claim 1, wherein the sensor is a first sensor configured to measure a first parameter, wherein the sensor wire comprises a second sensor disposed within the insertable portion at the distal end of the sensor wire, and wherein the second sensor is configured to measure a second parameter when inserted inside the patient.

The measurement system according to claim 25, wherein the first sensor wire is configured to measure a physiological parameter, the information transferred from the first communication module to the second communication module is information related to the physiological parameter, and the sensor values comprise sensor values related to the physiological parameter.

The measurement system according to claim 26, wherein the second sensor is configured to measure a non-physiological parameter, the information transferred from the first communication module to the second communication module is information related to the non-physiological parameter, and the sensor values comprise sensor values related to the non-physiological parameter.

28. The measurement system according to claim 27, wherein the non-physiological parameter is one of a magnetic field, a magnetic flux, an X-ray field, an electromagnetic field, and an optical signal.

The measurement system according to claim 1, wherein the sensor wire is configured to measure a non-physiological parameter, the information transferred from the first communication module to the second communication module is information related to the non-physiological parameter, and the sensor values are sensor values related to the non-physiological parameter.

30. The measurement system according to claim 29, wherein the non-physiological parameter is one of a magnetic field, a magnetic flux, an X-ray field, an electromagnetic field, and an optical signal.

31. The measurement system according to claim 29, wherein the non-physiological parameter originates inside or outside of the patient'"'"'s body.

32. The measurement system according to claim 1, further comprising an external device housing the second communication module, and wherein the external device is adapted to wirelessly communicate with the transceiver unit via the second communication module.

33. The measurement system according to claim 32, wherein the external device is a mobile unit.

34. A measurement system, comprising:

a sensor wire comprising an insertable portion configured to be inserted in a blood vessel of a patient'"'"'s body and a sensor disposed within the insertable portion at a distal end of the sensor wire, wherein the sensor is configured to measure a parameter when inserted inside the patient;

a transceiver unit, comprising;

a housing adapted to be connected to a proximal end of the sensor wire;

a first communication module within the housing adapted to wirelessly communicate by a communication signal with an external second communication module in order to transfer information to the external second communication module, wherein the communication signal, including sensor values, is generated by the transceiver unit and transferred as a data stream;

an activator configured to activate and initialize initiate the transceiver unit; and

a female connector with electrical contact surfaces,

wherein said activator activates and initializes the transceiver unit when electrical connections are established between the electrical contact surfaces of the female connector and electrical contact surfaces of a male connector at the proximal end of the sensor wire.

35. The measurement system according to claim 34, wherein said female connector comprises an insulating hollow housing containing a predetermined number of hollow contact surfaces to make contact with the electrical contact surfaces of the male connector.

36. The measurement system according to claim 34, wherein a fastener configured for securing the male connector in the female connector is provided at a distal end of the female connector.
