1. A visual display system for use in conjunction with a display device including an image display region, the display device having an active state and an inactive state, the system comprising:

  • one or more illumination sources disposed in a configuration so that illumination radiated therefrom illuminates an illumination region visually appearing to the viewer to at least partly peripherally surround the image display region; and

    a control unit configured to control the one or more illumination sources to vary the illumination of the illumination region in an inactive state of the display device when image data is not presented on the display region, the control unit further being configured to synchronize the varying illumination of the illumination region with a color scheme.
