1. A device for preventing emboli in fluid passing through a body vessel of a patient, comprising:

  • a guide wire having a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end being disposed outside of the patient during usage; and

    a tubular shaft member having a lumen, a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end of the tubular shaft member being disposed outside of the patient during usage, the guide wire being disposed within the lumen of the tubular shaft member in a co-axial arrangement, the tubular shaft member being rotatable and slideably disposed on the guide wire, the tubular shaft member including a filtering assembly movable between a collapsed position and an expanded position, the filtering assembly including a plurality of splines made from a portion of the tubular member, each spline being movable into a recess formed on the tubular member, the splines having a filter member attached thereto, the filter member having an inlet opening for receiving body fluid and a plurality of openings that allow the passing of body fluid in the body vessel while blocking the passage of emboli in the vessel.
