Abstract

Circuit modules and methods of construction thereof that contain composite meta-material dielectric bodies that have high effective values of real permittivity but which minimize reflective losses, through the use of host dielectric (organic or ceramic), materials having relative permittivities substantially less than ceramic dielectric inclusions embedded therein. The composite meta-material bodies permit reductions in physical lengths of electrically conducting elements such as antenna element(s) without adversely impacting radiation efficiency. The meta-material structure may additionally provide frequency band filtering functions that would normally be provided by other components typically found in an RF front-end.

Claims

1. A meta-material dielectric body, comprising:

a composite dielectric body comprising a host material and at least one crystalline dielectric inclusion embedded in the host material,

wherein the composite dielectric body has an effective relative permittivity≧

4 and a loss tangent that is ≦

further wherein the dielectric inclusions have a maximum nominal grain size≦

50 nanometers.

2. The meta-material dielectric body of claim 1, wherein:

the composite dielectric body has an effective permittivity that changes as a function of temperature≦

5. The meta-material dielectric body of claim 1, wherein the host material is composed of a material selected from the group consisting of amorphous silica and titania.

6. The meta-material dielectric body of claim 1, wherein:

the host material is composed of an organic polymer material.

7. The meta-material dielectric body of claim 1, wherein the host material is composed of an admixture of amorphous silica (α

-SiO₂) and either titania (TiO₂) or alumina (Al₂O₃) and has a corresponding chemical composition Si_1-xY_xO₂, where 0≦

1 and Y is Ti or Al.

8. The meta-material dielectric body of claim 1, wherein the host material is comprised of a ceramic dielectric material having a ∈

9. The meta-material dielectric body of claim 1, wherein the dielectric inclusions are selected from the group consisting of inclusions having relative a permittivity ∈

10. The meta-material dielectric body of claim 1, wherein the dielectric inclusions are composed of one or more ceramic materials having a ∈

The meta-material dielectric body of claim 1, wherein the dielectric inclusions are composed of a multi-component dielectric materials are selected from the group consisting of barium-strontium titanate ceramic (Ba_XSr_1-XTiO₃), barium-strontium zirconate-titanate (Ba_XSr_1-XZr_YTi_1-YO₃), and lead-lanthanum zirconate-titanate (Pb_XLa_1-XZr_YTi_1-YO₃), where 0≦

12. The meta-material dielectric body of claim 1, wherein the dielectric inclusions are composed of materials comprising a single metal oxide component and at least one valence state.

13. The meta-material dielectric body of claim 1, wherein the dielectric inclusions are composed of a material selected from the group consisting of ferrites, ferroelectric oxide ceramics, and titania.

The meta-material dielectric body of claim 1, wherein the dielectric inclusions are periodically arrayed with a period of between about 5% and about 15% of a wavelength of an electromagnetic wave so as to produce a broad stop band of frequencies above and below the frequency of said electromagnetic wave over which the transmission of electromagnetic frequencies are suppressed by at least 3 dB.

The meta-material body of claim 14, further comprising an inclusion-free zone in the host material within which propagation of a narrow band of electromagnetic frequencies above and below the frequency of the electromagnetic wave is permitted while electromagnetic waves outside of the narrow band but within the stop band is suppressed by at least 3 dB.

16. The meta-material dielectric body of claim 14, wherein the ratio of the relative permittivity of the dielectric inclusions to the relative permittivity of the host material is from about 10 to about 50.

17. The meta-material dielectric body of claim 1, wherein the dielectric inclusions are periodically arrayed in the host material and each has a cross-sectional area nominally defined by a major axis a and minor axis b, where a has a length between about 2.5% and 7.5% of a wavelength λ

_c, and b has a length between about 1% and 50% of a, wavelength λ

_c corresponding to an electromagnetic wave having a frequency centered within a stop band of frequencies within the propagation of electromagnetic waves outside will be substantially suppressed.

18. The meta-material dielectric body of claim 1, wherein:

the dielectric inclusions are periodically arrayed and composed of titania modified with between 0.1 and 5 mol % of at least one additive selected from the group consisting of magnesium oxide (MgO), calcium oxide (CaO), strontium oxide (SrO), barium oxide (BaO), zirconium oxide (ZrO₂), hafnium oxide (HfO₂), lanthanum oxide (La₂O₃), neodymium oxide (Nd₂O₃), tantalum pentoxide (Ta₂O₅), niobium oxide (NbO, NbO₂, or Nb₂O₅), tungsten oxide (WO₂, WO₃) and lead oxide (PbO); and

the ratio of the relative permittivity of the dielectric inclusions to that of the host materials is between about 25 and about 40.
