Abstract

Methods, systems and devices for network congestion control exploit the inherent burstiness of network traffic, using a wave-based characterization of network traffic and corresponding multiplexing methods and approaches.

Claims

1. A method for managing traffic congestion in a network, the method comprising:

utilizing one or more network management servers to monitor parameters of the network;

modeling traffic for a group of flows as probability waves based at least in part on the monitored parameters, wherein the height of each of the probability waves at time t is equal to a probability of traffic, P(t) at the time t, and wherein the modeling is performed by the one or more network management servers; and

controlling an operational condition of the network to manage the traffic congestion in accordance with at least some of the probability waves by combining selected flows of the group of flows, wherein the selected flows are chosen based on the corresponding probability waves of the selected flows when combined approximating a square wave.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising estimating the probability wave in accordance with a selected estimation method.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the estimation method is selected from a group comprising ad hoc determination, sampling, feedback controls, or other estimation method.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

selecting the flows to be combined such that the resulting combination waveforms are characterized by a relation Pa(t)+Pb(t)=X, where Pa is the probability wave for flow a, Pb is the probability wave for flow b, and X is the probability of traffic, wherein the probability of traffic can be greater than 1, corresponding to a defined overbooking level.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the combining of the selected flows comprises phase shifting at least one corresponding selected probability wave to better approximate the square wave.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the phase shifting comprises phase shifting the wave within delay constraints for a quality of service (QoS) defined for the respective flow.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the combining of the selected flows comprises selecting flows of the group of flows having the same wavelength or harmonics of the same wavelength.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the combining of the selected flows comprises selecting flows of the group of flows to avoid beat frequencies.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

applying the combining of the selected flows to a plurality of flows in a single layer of the network.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the combining of the selected flows comprises constructing a waveform that exploits differences in bandwidth between different layers of the network.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein QoS or other information utilized for managing the network are derived directly from the constructed waveform.

12. The method of claim 9 further comprising utilizing flow control feedback to establish a natural frequency of the constructed waveform based on a desired natural frequency for a particular subnet.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the constructed waveform arithmetically scales as a function of differences in bandwidth between different layers of the network.

14. The method of claim 1 further comprising combining the selected flows from at least two different layers of the network and based in part on satisfying quality of service parameters.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the combining of the selected flows is executed such that flows of lower layers in the network exhibit lower uncertainty in their probability functions.

16. The method of claim 15 further comprising:

recursively applying the monitoring, modeling and controlling steps with different policies and parameters over an entire range of bandwidth and quality of service (QoS).

17. The method of claim 16 wherein cooperating instances of the operational condition controlling of identical rank form a layer of a specific scope operable to manage flows of a given bandwidth range, specific QoS or scope of management.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein:

instances at a higher rank manage lower bandwidth ranges and narrower QoS, and have greater scope, and

instances at lower ranks have higher bandwidth ranges and manage flows with broader QoS and less scope.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein within a range of QoS handled by a given layer, specific flows between senders and receivers further subdivide the range of QoS.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein QoS parameters are expressed in terms of properties of the wave.

21. A system for managing traffic congestion in a network, the system comprising:

one or more servers that model traffic for the network and control operational conditions of the network to manage the traffic congestion, wherein the traffic is modeled based on monitored parameters of the network as probability waves corresponding to a group of flows of the network, wherein a height of each of the probability waves at time t is equal to a probability of traffic at the time t, wherein the operational condition controlling is based on combining selected flows of the group of flows so that the corresponding probability waves of the selected flows when combined approximate a square wave.

22. A method comprising:

accessing parameters associated with a network utilizing one or more computing devices;

modeling traffic for the network as a group of probability waves for a group of flows of the network, wherein the modeling is based at least in part on the monitored parameters and is performed by the one or more computing devices;

identifying selected probability waves of the group of probability waves that can be combined to approximate a square wave, wherein the identifying of the selected probability waves is performed by the one or more computing devices; and

controlling an operational condition of the network to manage traffic congestion of the network by combining selected flows of the group of flows that correspond with the identified selected probability waves, wherein the operational condition controlling is performed by the one or more computing devices.
