Abstract

Vehicle headlamp illumination is monitored and data is communicated to a host control unit. The host control unit implements a network accessible user interface to communicate with a user computer, which can include a graphical display of illumination information as well as a numerical indication of an automatically detected location of the edge of the headlamp beam. The network accessible user interface can also include the capability to manually audit the headlamp beam by allowing a user to specify a headlamp beam location, which will then update system parameters. The network accessible user interface may be a web-based interface where the host control unit implements a web server and the user computer is running a web browser. The system can include a collection of intelligent, independent sensor units, each incorporating a vertical array of sensing elements capable of detecting headlamp illumination. Multiple sensor units can be provided, which allows multiple vehicles and multiple headlamp types to be monitored without physical movement of the sensor units.

Claims

1. A monitoring system of illumination characteristics of vehicle headlamps comprising:

a host control unit comprising;

a first port configured to receive illumination data associated with one or more vehicle headlamps;

a second port coupled to a network and configured to communicate information over said network;

a processor configured to fetch and execute instructions;

memory storing program code wherein execution of said program code by said processor implements a network accessible user interface between said host control unit and a user computer coupled to said network, wherein said network accessible user interface comprises a real-time display of information based on said illumination data and includes the ability for a user to perform a visual audit by specifying an audit position, and

wherein said host control unit is configured to update one of more stored system parameters after receiving visual audit information from said user computer.

The system of claim 1 wherein said real-time display of information comprises a graphical display based on said illumination data and wherein said host control unit is configured to dynamically generate image information for said graphical display and to transmit said image information to said user computer over said network.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein said real-time display of information comprises a beam location and wherein said host control unit is configured to automatically determine said beam location based on said illumination data and said stored system parameters.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein said network accessible user interface further comprises the ability for a user to specify a design height for use in determining said beam location.

5. The system of claim 3 wherein said network accessible user interface further comprises the ability for a user to specify a vehicle type for use in determining said beam location.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein said stored system parameters include one or more items selected from the group consisting of:

illumination threshold, design height, sensor position and vehicle type.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein said network accessible user interface is a web-based interface and said host control unit implements a web server configured to communicate over said network with said user computer running a web browser.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein said program code implements a multi-tasking operating system running on said host control unit with separate tasks utilized for receiving illumination data and communicating with said user.

9. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

one or more sensor units coupled to said first port, each of said sensor units comprising a plurality of photosensors arranged in a substantially linear array;

wherein said host control unit is configured to receive said illumination data from said one or more sensors over said first port; and

wherein said one or more sensor units and said host control unit operate substantially independently of each other.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein said one or more sensor units comprises a plurality of sensor units and wherein said network accessible user interface allows the selection of a sensor unit among said plurality of said sensor units for display of illumination information.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein said network accessible user interface allows selection of a left sensor unit among said plurality of sensor units and selection of a right sensor unit among said plurality of sensor units.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein said network accessible user interface simultaneously displays real-time information associated with a left vehicle headlamp and a right vehicle headlamp.

13. The system of claim 1 wherein said program code further implements logging of information based on one or more items selected from the group consisting of:

said illumination data, environmental data, beam location, sensor position, design height, illumination threshold and vehicle type.

14. A method of monitoring illumination characteristics of vehicle headlamps comprising:

receiving illumination data associated with one or more vehicle headlamps by a host control unit through a first port;

providing a network accessible user interface by said host control unit to allow communication between said host control unit and a user computer, wherein said network accessible user interface comprises a real-time display of information based on said illumination data and includes the ability for a user to perform a visual audit by specifying an audit position;

communicating with a user computer over a network by said host control unit through a second port,

updating one or more stored system parameters by said host control unit after receiving visual audit information from said user computer.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein said real-time display of information comprises a graphical display based on said illumination data and further comprising the steps of:

dynamically generating by said host control unit image information for said graphical display; and

transmitting said image information from said host control unit to said user computer over said network.

16. The method of claim 14 wherein said real-time display of information comprises a beam location and further comprising the step of:

automatically determining by said host control unit said beam location based on said illumination data and said stored system parameters.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein said network accessible user interface further comprises the ability for a user to specify a design height for use in said step of automatically determining said beam location.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein said network accessible user interface further comprises the ability for a user to specify a vehicle type for use in said step of automatically determining said beam location.

19. The method of claim 14 wherein said stored system parameters include one or more items selected from the group consisting of:

illumination threshold, design height, sensor position and vehicle type.

20. The method of claim 14 wherein said network accessible user interface is a web-based interface and said host control unit implements a web server configured to communicate over said network with said user computer running a web browser.

21. The method of claim 14 wherein said host control unit executes a multi-tasking operating system with separate tasks utilized for said step of receiving illumination data and said step of communicating with a user computer.

22. The system of claim 14 further comprising the steps of:

communicating illumination data from one or more sensor units to said host control unit through said first port, each of said sensor units comprising a plurality of photosensors arranged in a substantially linear array;

wherein said one or more sensor units and said host control unit operate substantially independently of each other.

23. The method of claim 22 wherein said one or more sensor units comprises a plurality of sensor units and wherein said network accessible user interface allows the selection of a sensor unit among said plurality of said sensor units for display of illumination information.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein said network accessible user interface allows selection of a left sensor unit among said plurality of sensor units and selection of a right sensor unit among said plurality of sensor units.

25. The method of claim 24 wherein said network accessible user interface simultaneously displays real-time information associated with a left vehicle headlamp and a right vehicle headlamp.

26. The method of claim 14 further comprising the step of:

logging information by said host control unit based on one or more items selected from the group consisting of;

said illumination data, environmental data, beam location, sensor position, design height, illumination threshold and vehicle type.
