Abstract

A liquid crystal display device includes an illuminator and a liquid crystal panel for performing displaying by using light which is emitted from the illuminator. The liquid crystal panel includes a pair of substrates and a liquid crystal layer provided therebetween. The liquid crystal layer is formed of a liquid crystal material which contains molecules having at least one of a carbon-carbon triple bond and a polycyclic group. The illuminator includes a light source causing primary generation of at least blue light, among other light which is used for displaying.

Claims

1. A liquid crystal display device comprising:

an illuminator; and

a liquid crystal panel arranged to perform a display operation using light which is emitted from the illuminator;

wherein

the liquid crystal panel includes a pair of substrates and a liquid crystal layer provided between the pair of substrates;

the liquid crystal layer includes a liquid crystal material which includes molecules having at least one of a carbon-carbon triple bond and a polycyclic group;

the illuminator includes a light source causing primary generation of at least blue light, among other light which is used for displaying; and

the illuminator causes primary or secondary generation of red light and primary or secondary generation of green light.

2. The liquid crystal display device of claim 1, wherein a coefficient of rotational viscosity γ

₁ of the liquid crystal material at approximately 20°

C. is about 120 mPa·

s or less.

3. The liquid crystal display device of claim 1, wherein the molecules included in the liquid crystal material have a chemical structure expressed by one of the following formulae:

4. The liquid crystal display device of claim 3, wherein the liquid crystal material contains about 25 weight % or more of the molecules having the chemical structure.

5. The liquid crystal display device of claim 1, wherein a spectrum of blue light which is emitted by the light source has a peak wavelength at about 380 nm or more.

6. The liquid crystal display device of claim 1, wherein the light source generates substantially no light in an ultraviolet region.

7. The liquid crystal display device of claim 1, wherein the light source is a light-emitting diode.

8. The liquid crystal display device of claim 1, wherein the light source is an electroluminescence element.

9. The liquid crystal display device of claim 1, wherein the light source is a discharge tube.

10. The liquid crystal display device of claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal panel performs displaying in a vertical alignment mode.

11. The liquid crystal display device of claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal panel performs displaying in an in-plane switching mode.

12. The liquid crystal display device of claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal panel further includes a plurality of pixel regions arranged to modulate light emitted from the illuminator, and a switching element provided in each of the plurality of pixel regions.

The electronic apparatus comprising the liquid crystal display device of claim 1.

14. The electronic apparatus of claim 13, further comprising circuitry arranged to receive a television broadcast.

15. The liquid crystal display device of claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal panel performs displaying in a fringe field switching mode.

16. The liquid crystal display device of claim 1, wherein:

the liquid crystal panel further includes a plurality of pixel regions each capable of modulating light emitted from the illuminator; and

each of the plurality of pixel regions is orientation-divided into four types of regions.

17. A liquid crystal display device comprising:

an illuminator; and

a liquid crystal panel arranged to perform a display operation using light which is emitted from the illuminator;

wherein

the liquid crystal panel includes a pair of substrates and a liquid crystal layer provided between the pair of substrates;

the liquid crystal layer includes a liquid crystal material a coefficient of rotational viscosity γ

₁ of which at approximately 20°

C. is about 120 mPa·

s or less;

the illuminator includes a light source causing primary generation of at least blue light, among other light which is used for displaying; and

the illuminator causes primary or secondary generation of red light and primary or secondary generation of green light.

18. The liquid crystal display device of claim 17, wherein the liquid crystal material includes molecules having a chemical structure expressed by one of the following formulae:

19. The liquid crystal display device of claim 18, wherein the liquid crystal material contains about 25 weight % or more of the molecules having the chemical structure.

20. The liquid crystal display device of claim 17, wherein a spectrum of blue light which is emitted by the light source has a peak wavelength at about 380 nm or more.

21. The liquid crystal display device of claim 17, wherein the light source generates substantially no light in an ultraviolet region.

22. The liquid crystal display device of claim 17, wherein the light source is a light-emitting diode.

23. The liquid crystal display device of claim 17, wherein the light source is an electroluminescence element.

24. The liquid crystal display device of claim 17, wherein the light source is a discharge tube.

25. The liquid crystal display device of claim 17, wherein the liquid crystal panel performs displaying in a vertical alignment mode.

26. The liquid crystal display device of claim 17, wherein the liquid crystal panel performs displaying in an in-plane switching mode.

27. The liquid crystal display device of claim 17, wherein the liquid crystal panel further includes a plurality of pixel regions arranged to modulate light emitted from the illuminator, and

a switching element provided in each of the plurality of pixel regions.

28. An electronic apparatus comprising the liquid crystal display device of claim 17.

29. The electronic apparatus of claim 28, further comprising circuitry arranged to receive a television broadcast.

30. The liquid crystal display device of claim 17, wherein the liquid crystal panel performs displaying in a fringe field switching mode.

31. The liquid crystal display device of claim 17, wherein:

the liquid crystal panel further includes a plurality of pixel regions each capable of modulating light emitted from the illuminator; and

each of the plurality of pixel regions is orientation-divided into four types of regions.
