1. A method for diagnosing systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in an individual comprising:

  • (a) measuring the level of protein expression of follistatin-like protein-1 in a biological sample collected from the individual; and

    (b) comparing the level of protein expression of follistatin-like protein-1 in the sample from the individual with the level of follistatin-like protein 1 in a healthy subject, where an increased level of follistatin-like protein-1 in the individual sample relative to the healthy subject, wherein the individual exhibits joint swelling, indicates that the individual has a diagnosis of systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
