Abstract

Large tissue regions are treated using pairs of electrode arrays. The electrode arrays may be concave and disposed in tissue so that their concave portions are opposed to each other. Axial conductors may be provided extending from the arrays and toward each other in order to increase the heating of tissues lying along the axis between the deployed electrode arrays. By properly spacing the electrode arrays apart and selecting the diameters of the arrays, desired volumes of tissue may be treated, typically with a bipolar, radiofrequency current.

Claims

1. A probe for deploying an electrode array comprising:

a handle;

a first tubular member extending distally from the handle, the first tubular member having a first array of electrodes slidably disposed inside the tubular member between a retracted configuration and a deployed configuration;

a second tubular member disposed adjacent to a portion of the first tubular member, the second tubular member having a second array of electrodes slidably disposed inside the second tubular member between a retracted configuration and a deployed configuration;

a first conductor coupled the first array of electrodes and extending proximally to a first rack disposed in the handle;

a second conductor coupled the second array of electrodes and extending proximally to a second rack disposed in the handle;

a pinion gear disposed in the handle, the pinion gear interfacing with the first rack and the second rack; and

a knob connected to the first rack.

2. The probe of claim 1, further comprising an insulated gap between the first tubular member and the second tubular member, wherein the first tubular member and the second tubular member are electrically conductive.

3. The probe of claim 1, wherein a distal tip of the first tubular member is sharpened.

4. The probe of claim 1, wherein a distal tip of the second tubular member is sharpened.

5. The probe of claim 1, further comprising a pair of insulative tubes holding the first conductor and second conductor respectively.

6. The probe of claim 1, wherein the first and second arrays of electrodes have a concave face in the deployed configuration.

7. The probe of claim 6, wherein the concave face of the first array of electrodes faces the concave face of the second array of electrodes.

8. The probe of claim 1, wherein the first and second arrays of electrodes each comprise a plurality of individual electrodes which initially move axially and then evert as they are deployed.

9. The probe of claim 1, wherein proximal movement of the knob deploys the first array of electrodes from a distal opening of the first tubular member and deploys the second array of electrodes from a proximal opening of the second tubular member.

10. The probe of claim 1, wherein either or both of the first and the second electrode arrays span a planar area in the range between 3 cm² to 20 cm² when deployed.

11. The probe array of claim 1 further comprising a first connector coupled to the first rack for connecting the first array of electrodes to one pole of a power supply and a second connector coupled to the second rack for connecting the second array of electrodes to another pole of the power supply.

12. The probe array of claim 1, wherein the first array of electrodes is spaced at least 2 cm from the second array of electrodes.

13. A method for treating a treatment region in tissue comprising:

advancing a probe into tissue so as to place a first tubular member and a second tubular member disposed on a distal portion of the probe into the treatment region;

proximally retracting a knob on a hub to simultaneously deploy a first array of electrodes from first tubular member on one side of the treatment region and a second array of electrodes from the second tubular member on an opposing side of the treatment region; and

applying electrical energy between the deployed first array of electrodes and the second array of electrodes to necrose the tissue region there between.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the first array of electrodes and the second array of electrodes each have concave faces.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the concave face of the first array of electrodes faces the concave face of the second array of electrodes.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the treatment region comprises a tumor.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein the first array of electrodes and the second array of electrodes each comprise at least three electrodes, wherein the at least three electrodes deploy in an everting pattern.

18. The method of claim 13, wherein the first array of electrodes and the second array of electrodes are separated by at least 2 cm.

19. The method of claim 13, wherein the first array of electrodes and the second array of electrodes each span a planar area in the range between 3 cm² to 20 cm² when deployed.

20. The method of claim 13, wherein the tissue is selected from the group consisting of liver, lung, kidney, pancreas, stomach, uterus, and spleen.
