1. An automated medication preparation system having a plurality of stations comprising:
- a drug cabinet containing a plurality of drug vials each containing a respective medication and having identifying information associated therewith that relates to the contained medication, wherein a specific drug vial is retrieved from the drug cabinet in accordance with a request based on information inputted into the system;
an identifying station for identifying the specific drug vial retrieved from the drug cabinet as being a multi-use injectable medication vial containing a multi-use medication based on information inputted into the system;
a database in which a vial that has been identified as being a multi-use injectable medication vial is marked;
a medication preparation station where a dosage of medication is prepared in a just-in-time manner using an identified drug vial;
a holding station for storing multi-use injectable medication vials, the contents of which have been previously accessed for preparing the dosage of medication at the medication preparation station and that have been cataloged according to prescribed criteria to permit later use in preparing another dosage of medication at the medication preparation station; and
an automated transfer device for transferring the vial that has been identified and marked as being a multi-use injectable medication vial from one station to the holding station, wherein the automated transfer device receives and holds more than one vial and moves the vials in a controlled manner from one station to another station;
wherein two or more vials can be acted upon at the same time in different stations.

Abstract
An automated medication preparation system for preparing a prescribed dosage of medication in a drug delivery device includes a plurality of stations for receiving, handling and processing the drug delivery device so that the prescribed dosage of medication is delivered to the drug delivery device and a transporting device that receives and holds more than one drug delivery device and moves the drug delivery devices in a controlled manner from one station to another station. The system is configured so that two or more separate drug delivery devices can be acted upon at the same time.

2. An automated medication preparation system having a controller and a plurality of stations for processing inputted drug orders and preparing prescribed dosages of medication comprising:

a drug cabinet containing a plurality of drug vials each containing a respective medication and having identifying information associated therewith that relates to the contained medication, wherein a specific drug vial is retrieved from the drug cabinet in accordance with a request based on information inputted into the system, wherein the drug vials include at least one vial having a solid medication; an identifying station for identifying the specific drug vial retrieved from the drug cabinet as being a multi-use injectable medication vial containing a multi-use medication based on information inputted into the system; a database in which a vial that has been identified as being a multi-use injectable medication vial is marked; a reconstitution database that includes detailed instructions on how to reconstitute the drug identified by one respective drug order; a medication preparation station where a dosage of medication is prepared in a just-in-time manner using an identified drug vial, the medication preparation station including a drug reconstitution device that is in communication with the reconstitution database so that once a drug order is inputted and identified as being a reconstituted drug order, reconstitution instructions are received and the controller subsequently instructs the drug reconstitution device so that the prescribed dosage of medication is prepared in accordance with the reconstitution instructions; a holding station for storing multi-use injectable medication vials, the contents of which have been previously accessed for preparing the dosage of medication at the medication preparation station and that have been cataloged according to prescribed criteria to permit later use in preparing another dosage of medication at the medication preparation station; and an automated transfer device for transferring the vial that has been identified and marked as being a multi-use injectable medication vial from one station to the holding station. - View Dependent Claims (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15)

16. A method for handling multi-use medication vials in an automated medication preparation system comprising the steps of:

identifying a vial as a multi-use vial based on information input into the system; marking the vial identified as the multi-use vial in a database; retrieving a specific first multi-use medication vial from a source in accordance with a request based on information inputted into the system;
delivering the specific, first multi-use vial to a medication preparation station;
transferring from the delivered vial a predetermined amount of content and preparing, in a just-in-time manner, a dosage of medication from the predetermined amount, wherein the predetermined amount is less than 100% of its contents; anddelivering the first medication vial to a holding station that is configured to store a plurality of multi-use medication vials, the contents of which have been previously accessed for preparing the dosage of medication at the medication preparation station but still contain contents that can be used in preparing another dosage of medication, the multi-use vial being identifiable independent of information related to the holding station. - View Dependent Claims (17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24)
