Abstract

A medication-delivery method relating to an infusion device specifically adapted for syringe injections.

Claims

1. A medication-delivery method comprising:

inserting a portion of an infusion device into a living being using an insertion needle, the infusion device comprising;

a body having a body passageway, a top, a bottom surface, and an accessible surface that generally gets broader from the top to the bottom surface;

a cannula in fluid communication with at least a portion of the body passageway, the cannula having a portion extending from the body perpendicular to the bottom surface and an outer wall that includes an inwardly-tapered portion that is positioned upstream of the bottom surface; and

a septum positioned in the body passageway, the septum having a bottom surface, the septum being separate from but coupled to the body and configured such that any injection needle that penetrates the septum and exits the septum bottom surface will exit the septum bottom surface into open space within the body passageway;

inserting an injection needle through the septum, the injection needle having a first end, a second end, and a length extending between the first and second ends, the injection needle being straight along the length and terminating at the first and second ends;

injecting medication for the first time into the infusion device after the inserting the portion of the infusion device into the living being; and

delivering medication to the living being through the straight injection needle from a source that is not connected to a pump, the cannula being substantially straight along its entire length while the delivering medication occurs;

where the inserting the portion of the infusion device includes inserting the cannula into the living being such that the cannula enters the living being at an exterior skin surface and substantially perpendicularly to the exterior skin surface.

2. The method of claim 1, where the inserting the portion of the infusion device includes using an insertion device to insert the cannula into the living being such that the cannula enters the living being at the exterior skin surface and substantially perpendicularly to the exterior skin surface.

3. The method of claim 2, where the insertion device includes an insertion needle, and the using the insertion device includes inserting the insertion needle through the cannula and into the living being.

4. The method of claim 1, where the medication is delivered to a subcutaneous location within the living being.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

removing the injection needle; and

repeating the inserting the injection needle and the delivering when the living being needs another dose of medication.
