Abstract

The present disclosure provides an apparatus (100) that can include a first housing (110) and a second housing (120) rotationally coupled to the first housing where the second housing rotates with respect to the first housing about an axis of rotation (170). The apparatus can also include an optical transmitter (130) coupled to the first housing where the optical transmitter can be configured to transmit light. The apparatus can further include a lightguide (140) including a first lightguide end (144) substantially at the axis of rotation where the lightguide can include a second lightguide end (142) located at a distance from the axis of rotation where the second lightguide end is optically coupled to the optical transmitter. The apparatus can additionally include an optical receiver (135) coupled to the second housing at the axis of rotation where the optical receiver can also be optically coupled to the lightguide at the first lightguide end.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

a first housing;

a second housing rotationally coupled to the first housing, wherein the second housing rotates with respect to the first housing about an axis of rotation;

an optical transmitter coupled to the first housing, the optical transmitter configured to transmit light;

a lightguide including a first lightguide end substantially at the axis of rotation, the lightguide including a second lightguide end located at a distance from the axis of rotation, wherein the second lightguide end is optically coupled to the optical transmitter; and

an optical receiver coupled to the second housing at the axis of rotation, the optical receiver also optically coupled to the lightguide at the first lightguide end,

wherein the lightguide comprises a disk-shaped lightguide.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the second lightguide end rotates about the axis of rotation.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the second lightguide end includes a lightguide reflective end having an angle non-parallel with the axis of rotation, wherein the lightguide reflective end reflects light received from the optical transmitter.

The apparatus according to claim 3, wherein the first lightguide end includes a lightguide reflective section having an angle non-parallel with the axis of rotation, wherein the lightguide reflective section reflects light received from the lightguide reflective end towards the optical receiver.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the lightguide reflective section comprises a conical reflective section.

The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the second housing is configured to rotate 360 degrees about the first housing and wherein the optical transmitter, the lightguide, and the optical receiver provide for uninterrupted optical data communication between the first housing and the second housing throughout the entire 360 degrees.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1,

wherein the optical transmitter comprises a first optical transmitter, the lightguide comprises a first lightguide, and the optical receiver comprises a first optical receiver,

wherein the second lightguide end is a first second lightguide end that is located at a first distance from the axis of rotation,

wherein the apparatus further comprises:

a second optical transmitter coupled to the second housing, the second optical transmitter configured to transmit light in substantially the opposite direction from the first optical transmitter;

a second lightguide including a second first lightguide end substantially at the axis of rotation, the second lightguide including a second second lightguide end located at a second distance from the axis of rotation, the second distance being different from the first distance, wherein the second second lightguide end is optically coupled to the second optical transmitter; and

a second optical receiver coupled to the first housing substantially at the axis of rotation, the second optical receiver also optically coupled to the second lightguide at the second first lightguide end.

8. The apparatus according to claim 7,

wherein the first lightguide comprises a first disk-shaped lightguide having a first planar surface and a first diameter and the second lightguide comprises a second disk-shaped lightguide having a second planar surface and a second diameter, the second diameter being different from the first diameter, and

wherein the first planar surface is substantially parallel with the second planar surface.

9. The apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the first disk-shaped lightguide is configured to pass light from the second optical transmitter to the second second lightguide end.

10. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising:

a first filter configured to reflect light of a first wavelength while passing light of a second wavelength; and

a second filter configured to reflect light of the second wavelength while passing light of the first wavelength.

11. An apparatus comprising:

a first housing;

a second housing rotationally coupled to the first housing, wherein the second housing rotates with respect to the first housing about an axis of rotation;

a first optical transmitter coupled to the first housing, the first optical transmitter configured to transmit light;

a second optical transmitter coupled to the second housing, the second optical transmitter configured to transmit light in substantially the opposite direction from the first optical transmitter;

a first lightguide coupled to the second housing including a first first lightguide end substantially at the axis of rotation, the first lightguide including a first second lightguide end located at a first distance from the axis of rotation, wherein the first second lightguide end is optically coupled to the first optical transmitter;

a second lightguide including a second first lightguide end substantially at the axis of rotation, the second lightguide including a second second lightguide end located at a second distance from the axis of rotation, wherein the second second lightguide end is optically coupled to the second optical transmitter;

a first optical receiver coupled to the second housing substantially at the axis of rotation, the first optical receiver also optically coupled to the first lightguide at the first first lightguide end, the first optical receiver facing a substantially opposite direction from the first optical transmitter; and

a second optical receiver coupled to the first housing substantially at the axis of rotation, the second optical receiver also optically coupled to the second lightguide at the second first lightguide end, the second optical receiver facing a substantially opposite direction from the second optical transmitter,

wherein the first lightguide comprises a first disk-shaped lightguide having a first planar surface and the second lightguide comprises a second disk-shaped lightguide having a second planar surface, and

wherein the first planar surface is substantially parallel with the second planar surface.

12. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the second disk-shaped lightguide is configured to pass light from the first optical transmitter to the first second lightguide end.

13. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the first second lightguide end rotates about the axis of rotation and the second second lightguide end rotates about the axis of rotation.

14. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the first second lightguide end includes a lightguide reflective end having an angle non-parallel with the axis of rotation, wherein the lightguide reflective end reflects light received from the first optical transmitter.

15. The apparatus according to claim 14, wherein the first first lightguide end includes a lightguide reflective section having an angle non-parallel with the axis of rotation, wherein the lightguide reflective section reflects light received from the lightguide reflective end towards the optical receiver.

16. The apparatus according to claim 14, wherein the lightguide reflective section comprises a conical reflective section.

17. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the second housing is configured to rotate 360 degrees about the first housing and wherein the first optical transmitter, the lightguide, and the first optical receiver provide for uninterrupted optical data communication between the first housing and the second housing throughout the entire 360 degrees.

18. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the first optical receiver faces substantially the opposite direction from the second optical receiver.

19. An apparatus comprising:

a first housing;

a second housing rotationally coupled to the first housing, wherein the second housing rotates 360 degrees with respect to the first housing about an axis of rotation;

a first optical transmitter coupled to the first housing, the first optical transmitter configured to transmit light;

a second optical transmitter coupled to the second housing, the second optical transmitter configured to transmit light in substantially the opposite direction from the first optical transmitter;

a first disk-shaped lightguide coupled to the second housing, the first disk-shaped lightguide including a first planar surface, a first first lightguide end substantially at the axis of rotation, and a first second lightguide end located at a first distance from the axis of rotation, wherein the first second lightguide end is optically coupled to the first optical transmitter;

a second disk-shaped lightguide coupled to the first housing, the second disk-shaped lightguide including a second planar surface substantially parallel with the first planar surface, a second first lightguide end substantially at the axis of rotation, and a second second lightguide end located at a second distance from the axis of rotation, wherein the second second lightguide end is optically coupled to the second optical transmitter;

a first optical receiver coupled to the second housing substantially at the axis of rotation, the first optical receiver also optically coupled to the first disk-shaped lightguide at the first first lightguide end, the first optical receiver facing a substantially opposite direction from the first optical transmitter; and

a second optical receiver coupled to the first housing substantially at the axis of rotation, the second optical receiver also optically coupled to the second disk-shaped lightguide at the second first lightguide end, the second optical receiver facing a substantially opposite direction from the second optical transmitter,

wherein the first optical transmitter, the lightguide, and the first optical receiver provide for uninterrupted optical data communication between the first housing and the second housing throughout the entire 360 degrees.
