System for checking the accuracy of a prescription fill
First Claim
1. A prescription fill validation system, comprising:
- a first pharmacy at a first location and a second pharmacy at a second location;
wherein each pharmacy includes one or more electronic scales and one or more display units;
wherein each electronic scale includes a data input device to allow data to be input into the system;
a pharmacy server having a database to store information related to a plurality of drugs;
a network operatively coupling the one or more electronic scales, the one or more display units, and the pharmacy server;
the pharmacy server having a controller with a processor operatively coupled to the processor,the controller being programmed to store information related to a plurality of drugs in the database;
the controller programmed to receive periodic updates to the database;
the controller programmed to generate on one of the displays a display of data associated with a prescription to fill;
the controller programmed to receive data from one of the data input devices corresponding to a stock container selected by a user from a plurality of available stock containers;
the controller programmed to determine if the stock container selected by the user is the correct stock container to fill the unfilled prescription;
the controller programmed to retrieve from the database a piece weight of the drug from the selected stock container;
the controller programmed to receive from one of the one or more electronic scales a measured weight of a plurality of pills to be dispensed corresponding to the drug in the unfilled prescription;
the controller programmed to compare a weight of a plurality of pills measured at the one of the one or more electronic scales to a standard weight, the standard weight equaling a predicted total weight of the plurality of pills to ensure that a correct number of pills is dispensed;
the controller programmed to determine if the comparison is within an acceptable range; and
the controller programmed to generate an automated authorization for the prescription if the stock container selected by the user is the correct stock container to fill the prescription and if the comparison is within the acceptable range.

Abstract
A prescription fill validation system including a pharmacy with an electronic scale and a display unit; a pharmacy server having a database to store information related to a plurality of drugs and programmed to: receive data corresponding to a stock container selected by a user; determine if the stock container selected by the user is the correct stock container to fill the unfilled prescription; compare a weight of a plurality of pills measured at the electronic scale to a standard weight, the standard weight equaling a predicted total weight of the plurality of pills to ensure that a correct number of pills is dispensed; determine if the comparison is within an acceptable range; and generate an automated authorization for the prescription if the stock container selected by the user is the correct stock container to fill the prescription and if the comparison is within the acceptable range.
