1. A method for use by a code division multiple access (CDMA) cellular base station having a first and a second antenna, the method comprising:

  • transmitting a first synchronization code from the first antenna during a first time slot, a duration of said transmission of said first synchronization code being less than a duration of the first time slot;

    transmitting a second synchronization code from the second antenna during a second time slot, a duration of said transmission of said second synchronization code being less than a duration of the second time slot, wherein the first and second synchronization codes differ between base stations and base stations are distinguished using the synchronization codes; and

    transmitting control information over a control channel that is aligned with the first and second synchronization codes, wherein the control channel is spread using a CDMA code.
