1. A method of extending the shelf-life of platelets, comprising the steps of:

  • (a) admixing a preservative composition with unactivated platelets to provide a preserved platelet composition; and

    (b) storing the preserved platelet composition in an oxygen-permeable container or an oxygen-impermeable container,wherein the preservative composition comprises a single antiplatelet agent, an anticoagulant that reversibly inhibits factor IIa, and a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier at a concentration range of 1-18 gm/dl, wherein said antiplatelet agent is eptifibatide.
