1. A navigation system to navigate a procedure on an anatomy, comprising:

  • an instrument having a first portion and a second portion configured to be moved relative to the anatomy, wherein at least one of the first portion or the second portion comprises a passage;

    an identification member including field distortion members coupled to one of the first portion or the second portion;

    a tracking device passed through the passage comprised in the first portion or the second portion of the instrument and configured to be tracked, the tracking device responsive to the field distortion members to obtain identification information regarding an identification of the instrument; and

    a processor operable to identify the instrument based at least in part on the identification information obtained from the tracking device.
