1. A method for capturing and utilizing data from a moving real-world object for use in a game, the method including the following steps performed by a user:

  • a. moving a real-world object with a portable sensor unit removably mounted thereon, the sensor unit including an accelerometer capable of detecting motion in at least one dimension and a display screen, wherein the sensor unit collects motion data over a data capture time period;

    b. responding to instructions regarding how the real-world object should be moved;

    c. at a later time after motion of the real-world object has ceased, supplying to a gaming unit a motion data set generated from the collected motion data;

    d. playing a game on the gaming unit wherein;

    (1) the game features a virtual game object in motion, and(2) wherein the motion of the virtual game object is dependent on;

    i. the motion data set, andii. game play input received from the user by the gaming unit during the display of the moving virtual game object.
