Abstract

Apparatus and method for determining an operating state of a personal acoustic device by receiving signal from first and second movement sensors indicating movement detected by each, wherein the first movement sensor is disposed on a portion of the personal acoustic device structured to be worn on a user'"'"'s head to enable the first movement sensors to detect movements of a user'"'"'s head when the personal acoustic device is in position on the user'"'"'s head such that a casing of the personal acoustic device is adjacent an ear of the user, and wherein the second movement sensor is disposed on a portion of the personal acoustic device structure to not be worn on a user'"'"'s head.

Claims

1. A personal acoustic device comprising:

a first casing structured to be positioned adjacent an ear of a user;

a second casing structured to be positioned away from both ears of the user;

a first movement sensor disposed on a portion of the personal acoustic device that includes the first casing and that is structured to be worn on the user'"'"'s head to enable the first movement sensor to detect movements of the user'"'"'s head at a time when the personal acoustic device is in position on the user'"'"'s head such that the first casing is adjacent an ear of the user;

a second movement sensor disposed on the second casing to provide a reference against which to compare movements detected by the first movement detector; and

a control circuit coupled to the first and second movement sensors, and structured to;

receive a first signal from the first movement sensor indicating a detected movement of the portion;

receive a second signal from the second movement sensor indicating a detected movement of the second casing;

distinguish a differential mode movement between the detected movement of the portion and the detected movement of the second casing from a common mode movement;

analyze a characteristic of the differential mode movement to determine whether the differential mode movement indicates a movement of the user'"'"'s head relative to the reference caused by the user; and

determine that the personal acoustic device is in position on the user'"'"'s head in response to determining that the differential mode movement indicates a movement of the user'"'"'s head relative to the reference caused by the user;

further comprising a connector disposed on the second casing to couple the personal acoustic device to an intercom system of a vehicle such that the reference comprises the vehicle at times when the connector is coupled to the intercom system.

The personal acoustic device of claim 1, wherein the control circuit is further structured to determine that the personal acoustic device is not in position on the user'"'"'s head in response to there being no differential mode movements determined to indicate a movement of the user'"'"'s head relative to the reference caused by the user for a predetermined period of time.

3. The personal acoustic device of claim 1, further comprising a cable coupling the portion and the second casing, and conveying an audio signal between the portion and the second casing.

4. The personal acoustic device of claim 1, wherein the portion and the second casing are coupled through wireless linkage by which an audio signal is conveyed between the portion and the second casing.

5. A personal acoustic device comprising:

a first casing structured to be positioned adjacent an ear of a user;

a second casing structured to be positioned away from both ears of the user;

a first movement sensor disposed on a portion of the personal acoustic device that includes the first casing and that is structured to be worn on the user'"'"'s head to enable the first movement sensor to detect movements of the user'"'"'s head at a time when the personal acoustic device is in position on the user'"'"'s head such that the first casing is adjacent an ear of the user;

a second movement sensor disposed on the second casing to provide a reference against which to compare movements detected by the first movement detector; and

a control circuit coupled to the first and second movement sensors, and structured to;

receive a first signal from the first movement sensor indicating a detected movement of the portion;

receive a second signal from the second movement sensor indicating a detected movement of the second casing;

distinguish a differential mode movement between the detected movement of the portion and the detected movement of the second casing from a common mode movement;

analyze a characteristic of the differential mode movement to determine whether the differential mode movement indicates a movement of the user'"'"'s head relative to the reference caused by the user; and

determine that the personal acoustic device is in position on the user'"'"'s head in response to determining that the differential mode movement indicates a movement of the user'"'"'s head relative to the reference caused by the user;

further comprising;

a cable having a first end that is coupled to the first portion and along which the second casing is disposed; and

a connector coupled to a second end of the cable to couple the personal acoustic device to an intercom system of a vehicle such that the reference comprises the location of the second casing along the length of the cable at times when the connector is coupled to the intercom system.

6. A personal acoustic device comprising:

a first casing structured to be positioned adjacent an ear of a user;

a second casing structured to be positioned away from both ears of the user;

a first movement sensor disposed on a portion of the personal acoustic device that includes the first casing and that is structured to be worn on the user'"'"'s head to enable the first movement sensor to detect movements of the user'"'"'s head at a time when the personal acoustic device is in position on the user'"'"'s head such that the first casing is adjacent an ear of the user;

a second movement sensor disposed on the second casing to provide a reference against which to compare movements detected by the first movement detector; and

a control circuit coupled to the first and second movement sensors, and structured to;

receive a first signal from the first movement sensor indicating a detected movement of the portion;

receive a second signal from the second movement sensor indicating a detected movement of the second casing;

distinguish a differential mode movement between the detected movement of the portion and the detected movement of the second casing from a common mode movement;

analyze a characteristic of the differential mode movement to determine whether the differential mode movement indicates a movement of the user'"'"'s head relative to the reference caused by the user; and

determine that the personal acoustic device is in position on the user'"'"'s head in response to determining that the differential mode movement indicates a movement of the user'"'"'s head relative to the reference caused by the user;

further comprising a connector disposed on the second casing to couple the personal acoustic device to an intercom system of a vehicle, wherein the control circuit is further structured to;

receive an indication of whether the connector is coupled to an intercom system of a vehicle; and

alter a manner in which the control circuit determines that the personal acoustic device is in position on the user'"'"'s head in response to the indication of whether the connector is coupled to an intercom system.

7. The personal acoustic device of claim 6, wherein the control circuit is further structured to:

analyze the detected movement of the portion and the detected movement of the second casing over a recurring interval of time to derive differences in orientation between the first and second movement sensors; and

employ the derived differences in orientation between the first and second movement sensors to create a transform by which indications of detected movement of one of the portion and the second casing are altered to align the orientations of indications of detected movement of the portion and the second casing in preparation for other analysis.

8. The personal acoustic device of claim 7, wherein the control circuit is further structured to monitor the transform for an instance of a change in the transform arising from a change in an orientation in one of the first and second movement sensors to detect movement.

9. The personal acoustic device of claim 6, wherein:

the first movement sensor comprises a first gyroscope;

the second movement sensor comprises a second gyroscope;

the first signal indicates a first detected rotational movement of the portion; and

the second signal indicates a second detected rotational movement of the second casing.

The personal acoustic device of claim 9, wherein the control circuit being structured to analyze a characteristic of the differential mode movement comprises the control circuit being structured to compare an extent of rotation of the differential mode movement to a predetermined minimum extent of rotation during a predetermined sampling period to determine whether the differential mode movement indicates a movement of the user'"'"'s head relative to the reference caused by the user.

11. The personal acoustic device of claim 9, wherein:

the control circuit being structured to analyze a characteristic of the differential mode movement comprises the control circuit being structured to compare the characteristic of the differential mode movement to a predetermined maximum value for that characteristic to determine whether the differential mode movement indicates a movement of the user'"'"'s head that is humanly possible such that the differential mode movement indicates a movement of the user'"'"'s head relative to the reference caused by the user; and

the characteristic is selected from a group consisting of an extent of rotation of the differential mode movement, a speed of rotation of the differential mode movement, an acceleration in rotation of the differential mode movement, a rate of change in acceleration in rotation of differential mode movement, and a frequency of repetition of the differential mode movement.

The personal acoustic device of claim 11, wherein the control circuit is further structured to immediately determine that the personal acoustic device is not in position on the user'"'"'s head in response to the characteristic of the differential mode movement exceeding the predetermined maximum value for that characteristic.

13. The personal acoustic device of claim 6, wherein:

the first movement sensor comprises a first accelerometer;

the second movement sensor comprises a second accelerometer;

the first signal indicates a first detected acceleration of the portion;

the second signal indicates a second detected acceleration of the second casing; and

the control circuit being structured to distinguish a differential mode movement between the detected movement of the portion and the detected movement of the second casing from a common mode movement comprises the control circuit being structured to distinguish a differential mode acceleration between the first and second detected accelerations from a common mode acceleration.

14. The personal acoustic device of claim 13, wherein:

the control circuit being structured to analyze a characteristic of the differential mode movement comprises the control circuit being structured to compare the characteristic of the differential mode acceleration to a predetermined maximum value for that characteristic to determine whether the differential mode acceleration indicates a movement of the user'"'"'s head that is humanly possible such that the differential mode acceleration indicates a movement of the user'"'"'s head relative to the reference caused by the user; and

the characteristic is selected from a group consisting of a magnitude of the differential mode acceleration, a rate of change in the differential mode acceleration, and a frequency of repetition in the differential mode acceleration.

The personal acoustic device of claim 14, wherein the control circuit is further structured to immediately determine that the personal acoustic device is not in position on the user'"'"'s head in response to the characteristic of the differential mode acceleration exceeding the predetermined maximum value for that characteristic.

16. The personal acoustic device of claim 13, wherein the control circuit is further structured to:

analyze a characteristic of the common mode movement by comparing a characteristic of the common mode acceleration to a predetermined maximum value for that characteristic, the characteristic being selected from a group consisting of a magnitude of the common mode acceleration, a rate of change in the common mode acceleration, and a frequency of repetition in the common mode acceleration; and

immediately determine that the personal acoustic device is not in position on the user'"'"'s head in response to the characteristic of the common mode acceleration exceeding the predetermined maximum value for that characteristic.

The personal acoustic device of claim 16, wherein the control circuit is further structured to immediately determine that the personal acoustic device is in position on the user'"'"'s head in response to the characteristic of the common mode acceleration not exceeding the predetermined maximum value for that characteristic, wherein the characteristic is the frequency of repetition in the common mode acceleration, and wherein the frequency of repetition in the common mode acceleration is a frequency indicative of repetitive human muscle movement.
