1. A communications system comprising:

  • a space-based communications satellite; and

    a ground-based gateway comprising a processor that is configured to receive, through a wireless communication link from the space-based communications satellite, a plurality of signals that are frequency division multiplexed when received by the ground-based gateway and that are generated by a plurality of antenna elements of the space-based communications satellite,wherein the space-based communications satellite is configured to;

    receive measures of error from radioterminals;

    determine gains for use with respective ones of the antenna elements of the space-based communications satellite responsive to the measures of error; and

    excite the antenna elements of the space-based communication satellite responsive to the respective gains to transmit the plurality of signals to the ground-based gateway and maintain coherence between the plurality of signals that are frequency division multiplexed when received by the ground-based gateway.
