1. An intelligent electronic device comprising:

  • a metering module that obtains values of a parameter of an alternating current (AC) electrical service over a predetermined number of AC cycles of an AC signal delivered by the AC electrical service; and

    a processing module that processes the values obtained by the metering module, the processing module operative to average a plurality of the values of the parameter over the predetermined number of AC cycles, each AC cycle including a predetermined number of values,wherein the processing module determines the average by determining a subset of values of the parameter for each AC cycle of the predetermined number of AC cycles, each subset of values being obtained at temporally similar points in each of the plurality of AC cycles and calculating the average value of the parameter based on the subset of values.
