1. In a communication system, a method for providing access communications between a customer premise and a service edge, comprising:

  • receiving a communication from a customer premise equipment;

    along a communications path to the service edge, sending the communication as a carrier-tagged communication, wherein the carrier-tagged communication comprises a data frame having variable frame length capability and wherein the communication from the customer premise equipment comprises a hardware address that is passed transparently by the communications path to the service edge; and

    applying at least one of a second carrier tag and a second carrier tag value to the data frame at a point along the communications path at which the data frame comprises at least one of a first carrier tag and a first carrier tag value, respectively, wherein the data frame as sent along at least a portion of the communications path comprises the at least one of a first carrier tag and a first carrier tag value and the at least one of a second carrier tag and a second carrier tag value.
