Abstract

A physiological measurement system is disclosed which can take a pulse oximetry signal such as a photoplethysmogram from a patient and then analyse the signal to measure physiological parameters including respiration, pulse, oxygen saturation and movement. The system can be used as a general monitor, or more specifically, to for infant or adult apnea, and to guard against sudden infant death syndrome. The system comprises a pulse oximeter which includes a light emitting device and a photodetector attachable to a subject to obtain a pulse oximetry signal; analogue to digital converter means arranged to convert said pulse oximetry signal into a digital pulse oximetry signal; signal processing means suitable to receive said digital pulse oximetry signal and arranged to decompose that signal by wavelet transform means; feature extraction means arranged to derive physiological information from the decomposed signal; an analyser component arranged to collect information from the feature extraction means; and data output means arranged in communication with the analyser component.

Claims

1. A method of measuring physiological parameters, comprising:

using a signal acquisition means to obtain a pulse oximetry signal;

performing, with signal processing means, a first wavelet transform decomposition of the pulse oximetry signal to generate a decomposed pulse oximetry signal;

identifying a primary band and a secondary band on a transform surface of a scalogram representing the decomposed pulse oximetry signal;

performing, with the signal processing means, a second wavelet transform decomposition of secondary band information derived from the secondary band to generate decomposed secondary band information; and

deriving signal features from the decomposed secondary band information that are pertinent to identifying physiological parameters causing the primary band.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

defining a selected path along the secondary band;

extracting a first perturbation signal comprising a time-frequency locus of points on the selected path; and

extracting a second perturbation signal comprising a time-amplitude locus of points on the selected path;

wherein the secondary band information comprises the first perturbation signal and the second perturbation signal, and wherein performing the second wavelet transform decomposition of the secondary band information comprises decomposing the first perturbation signal and the second perturbation signal to generate the decomposed secondary band information.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the selected path is in the vicinity of a ridge.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the selected path is a ridge.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the selected path is a first selected path, the method further comprising the steps of:

defining a second selected path along the primary band;

deriving primary band information from the second selected path;

comparing the primary band information with the decomposed secondary band information; and

extracting an optimum data set in response to the comparison, said optimum data set being a data set that most accurately represents the physiological parameters causing the primary band.

The method of claim 5, wherein extracting the optimum data set comprises choosing one of the group comprising the primary band information, information derived from the decomposed first perturbation signal, and information derived from the decomposed second perturbation signal, in response to the comparison.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the pulse oximetry signal is a photoplethysmogram (PPG).

8. The method of claim 1, wherein performing the first wavelet transform decomposition and performing the second wavelet transform decomposition comprises a continuous wavelet transform computation.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the primary band is a breathing band and the secondary band is a pulse band.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the decomposed secondary band information is used to determine patient respiration information.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the patient respiration information is used to determine a respiration rate of a patient.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the patient respiration information is used to identify individual breaths of a patient.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the patient respiration information is used to identify breathing irregularities.

14. A physiological measurement system comprising:

a signal acquisition means which includes a light emitting device and a photodetector attachable to a subject to obtain a pulse oximetry signal;

analogue to digital converter means arranged to convert said pulse oximetry signal into a digital pulse oximetry signal;

signal processing means suitable to receive said digital pulse oximetry signal and arranged to perform a first wavelet transform decomposition of the digital pulse oximetry signal to generate a decomposed pulse oximetry signal;

a respiration component arranged to identify a primary band and a secondary band on a transform surface of a scalogram representing the decomposed pulse oximetry signal;

and to derive signal features from decomposed secondary band information that are pertinent to identifying physiological parameters causing the primary band;

wherein the signal processing means is further arranged to perform a second wavelet transform decomposition of secondary band information derived from the secondary band to generate the decomposed secondary band information.

15. The system of claim 14, in which the signal processing means and the respiration component are arranged to process the pulse oximetry signal by the method of claim 2.

16. The system of claim 14, further comprising an analyzer component arranged to collect information from the respiration component, and a device output arranged in communication with the analyzer component.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the analyzer component is arranged to generate an alarm signal upon detection of a predetermined set of conditions.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the detection of the predetermined set of conditions includes detection of a respiration artifact for at least a given time.

19. The system of claim 16, wherein the device output comprises visual display means operable to display the pulse oximetry signal and information derived therefrom in real time;

and alarm means operable to receive the alarm signal from the analyzer component and to generate an alarm.

20. A method of measuring a characteristic parameter, comprising:

obtaining a signal which varies according to a set of parameters including the characteristic parameter;

performing a first wavelet transform decomposition of the signal to generate a decomposed signal;

identifying a primary band representative of the characteristic parameter, and a secondary band representative of a secondary parameter, on a transform surface of a scalogram representing the decomposed signal;

performing a second wavelet transform decomposition of secondary band information derived from the secondary band to generate decomposed secondary band information; and

deriving signal features from the decomposed secondary band information that are pertinent to identifying parameters causing the primary band.

The method of claim 20, wherein the signal is one of the group consisting of an electrocardiogram, an electroencephalogram, an electrogastrogram, an electromyogram, a heart rate signal, a pathological sound signal, an ultrasound signal, a dynamic signal, a non-destructive testing signal, a condition monitoring signal, a fluid signal, a geophysical signal, an astronomical signal, an electrical signal, a financial signal, a financial index signal, a sound signal, a speech signal, a chemical signal, a meteorological signal, and a climate signal.
