1. A vacuum backflow prevention system, comprising:
- a fluid ejector tube adapted for insertion into a patient'"'"'s mouth;
a backflow prevention device, comprising;
a distal portion defining a valve seat portion and an inlet, the distal portion operably connected to the fluid ejector tube;
a proximal portion defining an outlet, the proximal portion configured for operative connection to the distal portion;
a valve member retained between the proximal and distal portions at a single location along a peripheral edge of the valve member, the valve member being moveable from a first position substantially blocking fluid flow between the inlet and the outlet, and a second position wherein at least a portion of the valve member is moved in a direction toward the outlet to permit fluid to flow from the inlet to the outlet under a vacuum condition, the valve member having a stiffening structure extending from a surface of the valve member that faces the outlet on a portion of the valve member that is moved toward the outlet in the second position, the stiffening structure providing increased resistance to movement of the at least a portion of the valve flap from the first position to the second position;
wherein the stiffening structure extends around a circumference of the valve member to provide an increased thickness of the valve member around the circumference.

Abstract
A backflow-prevention system that substantially prevents contaminant backflow at a treatment site. The system includes a fluid ejector tube for insertion into the patient'"'"'s mouth and a backflow prevention device that receives fluid from the fluid ejector tube. The backflow prevention device includes an internally positioned valve member. The valve member limits contaminant backflow. The valve member is movable between open and closed positions based on a vacuum pressure condition in the system.

9. A backflow prevention device, comprising:
-
a distal portion defining a distal opening; a proximal portion defining a proximal opening; and a valve member positioned at a location between the distal portion and the proximal portion along only a portion of a peripheral edge of the valve member, the valve member being automatically moveable from a first position substantially blocking fluid flow between the distal opening and the proximal opening, and a second position wherein a portion of the valve member is moved toward the proximal opening to permit fluid to flow between the distal opening and the proximal opening upon application of a predetermined fluid force to the valve member, the valve member including a stiffening structure extending in a proximal direction from a primary surface of the valve member that faces the proximal opening and extending around a perimeter of the valve member, the stiffening structure being positioned on the portion of the valve member that moves toward the proximal opening, the stiffening structure providing a variable thickness in the valve member. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17)
