1. A capacitive object position detector for indicating a desired user interface navigation task, comprising:

  • a touch sensor having a plurality of electrodes disposed in a substantially closed loop, said touch sensor configured to capacitively sense an object proximate to said substantially closed loop, said substantially closed loop surrounding an inactive interior region, and wherein said touch sensor does not capacitively sense an object in said inactive interior region for said desired user interface navigation task; and

a processor coupled to said touch sensor, said processor configured to process signals from said touch sensor and provide relative motion information about said object moving proximate to said substantially closed loop, said relative motion information provided in the form of a difference between a first position and second position of said object, said relative motion information indicating said desired user interface navigation task, and wherein said processor is further configured to determine an amount of relative motion in a clockwise direction about the substantially closed loop between samples, and if the amount of relative motion in the clockwise direction about the substantially closed loop between samples is greater than a predetermined amount in the clockwise direction, then provide the relative motion information as an amount of relative motion in a counter-clockwise direction opposite the clockwise direction.
