1. An assembly, comprising:

  • an outer shaft having a proximal portion, a distal portion, and a longitudinally collapsible portion disposed between the proximal and distal portions, the outer shaft defining an outer shaft lumen, the longitudinally collapsible portion moveable between an extended configuration and a collapsed configuration;

    a guidewire disposed within the outer shaft lumen, the guidewire including a filter fixed to the guidewire; and

    guidewire gripping means positioned within the outer shaft lumen and fixedly attached to the outer shaft, the guidewire gripping means reversibly moveable between a relaxed configuration in which the guidewire may move freely in a longitudinal direction and a constricted configuration in which the guidewire is constrained from movement in a longitudinal direction;

    wherein the guidewire extends through the guidewire gripping means.
