A dispersion comprising coated nanoparticles having an average particle size of less than 100 nanometers, wherein the coated nanoparticles comprise a core particle having a density less than 2 gm/cc and a shell that is prepared from a substance having a density greater than 2 gm/cc, wherein the core particle comprises polyacrylates, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyimide, polycarbonate, polystyrene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyurethane, or polymethyl-methacrylate.
