Abstract

A battery operated device includes a receiver for receiving a transmission that includes a postamble. A sensor, in a tire, measures a parameter of the tire and outputs data indicative of the parameter. A microprocessor is coupled to the receiver and the sensor. The microprocessor is configured to periodically partially awaken to determine whether the transmission is likely a forward link packet (FLP) by examining the postamble, and to transmit the data in a reverse link packet (RLP) in response to confirming that the transmission is a FLP.

Claims

1. A system for conserving battery life in a battery operated device comprising:

a receiver for receiving a repeated transmission that comprises a forward link packet (FLP), the FLP includes a data portion and a postamble;

a transmitter configured to transmit a reverse link packet (RLP) in response to the FLP; and

a microprocessor coupled to the receiver, the microprocessor periodically partially awakening to determine whether the repeated transmission is likely a FLP by examining the postamble, the microprocessor reads the data portion, if the repeated transmission is determined to likely be the FLP, to determine whether a response from the battery operated device is requested, and the microprocessor turns ON the transmitter only after the microprocessor determines from the data portion that the response is requested, wherein the transmitter stabilizes on an appropriate return link channel during a time period while the postamble is received by the receiver.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the postamble is Manchester encoded.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the postamble includes a predetermined number of transitions.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the microprocessor determines whether the repeated transmission is likely a FLP by determining if the transmission includes a predetermined number of transitions.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the microprocessor is configured to collect data from a sensor.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the postamble shortens the amount of time that the transmitter is ON.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the postamble increases the amount of time between the data portion of the FLP and a RLP sent from the battery operated device, allowing the battery operated device enough time to stabilize the transmitter on the appropriate return link channel.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the transmitter is turned ON only in response to a valid FLP.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the transmitter uses a successive approximation routine to obtain data from one device out of a plurality of devices.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the battery operated device only responds to a valid FLP having a specific identification number associated with the device.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the battery operated device includes the transmitter having a phase locked loop (PLL).

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the postamble increases the amount of time that the battery operated device has to obtain a PLL lock on the appropriate return link channel.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein the postamble shortens the amount of time that the PLL is ON.

14. The system of claim 11, wherein the PLL is turned ON only in response to a valid FLP.

15. The system of claim 11, wherein the microprocessor first examines the data portion of the FLP and, if that portion indicates that the response from the battery operated device is requested, turns on the PLL, and then reads and verifies a cyclical redundancy check (CRC) included in the FLP.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the battery operated device turns OFF the PLL if the CRC included in the FLP is invalid.

17. The system of claim 11, wherein the postamble reduces the amount of time the PLL is ON, thereby saving battery power when the battery operated device is not in the presence of a valid FLP.

18. The system of claim 11, wherein the postamble increases the amount of time between the data portion of the FLP and a RLP from the battery operated device, allowing the battery operated device enough time to obtain a PLL lock on an appropriate return link channel.

19. The system of claim 1, wherein the battery operated device only responds to the transmission if it is a valid FLP.

20. The system of claim 1, wherein the postamble shortens the amount of time that the receiver is ON.

21. A system for conserving battery life in a battery operated device comprising:

a receiver for receiving a repeated transmission that comprises a forward link packet (FLP), the FLP includes a data portion and a postamble;

a transmitter that includes a phase locked loop (PLL); and

a microprocessor coupled to the receiver, the microprocessor periodically partially awakening to determine whether the repeated transmission is likely a FLP by turning ON the receiver only long enough to determine if the transmission includes a predetermined number of transitions, the microprocessor reads the data portion, if the repeated transmission is determined to likely be the FLP, to determine whether a response from the battery operated device is requested, and the microprocessor turns ON the PLL only after the microprocessor determines from the data portion that the response is requested, wherein the PLL locks onto an appropriate return link channel during a time period while the postamble is received by the receiver.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the microprocessor fully awakens to determine whether the repeated transmission is a valid FLP by examining the data portion of the FLP.

23. The system of claim 21, wherein the postamble includes a stream of logical zeros.

24. The system of claim 21, wherein the postamble includes a stream of logical ones.

25. The system of claim 21, wherein the postamble begins with a stream of logical zeros and ends with a logical one.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the transition from logical zero to logical one signifies the end of the valid FLP.

27. The system of claim 21, wherein the postamble begins with a stream of logical ones and ends with a logical zero.

28. The system of claim 21, wherein the postamble increases the amount of time between the data portion of the FLP and a RLP from the battery operated device, allowing the battery operated device enough time to stabilize the transmitter on the appropriate return link channel.

29. The system of claim 21, wherein the transmitter is turned ON only in response to a valid FLP.

30. The system of claim 21, wherein the postamble increases the amount of time that the battery operated device has to obtain a PLL lock on the appropriate return link channel.

31. The system of claim 21, wherein the postamble shortens the amount of time that the PLL is ON.

32. The system of claim 21, wherein the microprocessor first examines a the data portion of the FLP and, if that portion indicates that the response from the battery operated device is requested, turns on the PLL, and then reads and verifies a cyclical redundancy check (CRC) included in the FLP.

33. The system of claim 32, wherein the battery operated device turns OFF the PLL if the CRC included in the FLP is invalid.

34. The system of claim 21, wherein the PLL is turned ON only in response to a valid FLP.

35. The system of claim 21, wherein the postamble reduces the amount of time the PLL is ON, thereby saving battery power when the battery operated device is not in the presence of a valid FLP.

36. The system of claim 21, wherein the postamble increases the amount of time between the data portion of the FLP and a RLP from the battery operated device, allowing the battery operated device enough time to obtain a PLL lock on the appropriate return link channel.

37. The system of claim 21, wherein the postamble shortens the amount of time that the transmitter is ON.

38. The system of claim 21, wherein the battery operated device only responds to the transmission if it is a valid FLP.

39. The system of claim 21, wherein the postamble shortens the amount of time that the receiver is ON.

40. The system of claim 21, wherein the FLP is Manchester encoded.

41. A method for conserving battery life in a battery operated device comprising:

receiving a repeated wireless transmission;

periodically partially awakening;

while partially awakened, determining if the repeated wireless transmission is likely a forward link packet (FLP) by determining if the repeated transmission includes a valid postamble;

when the repeated wireless transmission is determined to include the valid postamble, fully awakening to determine from a data portion of the FLP whether a response from the battery operated device is requested; and

turning a transmitter of the battery operated device ON only after determining that the response is requested from the data portion, wherein the transmitter stabilizes on an appropriate return link channel during a time period while the postamble is received.

42. The method of claim 41, wherein the postamble is valid if it includes a predetermined number of transitions.

43. The method of claim 41, further including fully awakening to determine whether the repeated transmission is a valid FLP by examining at least a portion of the FLP data.

44. The method of claim 43, further including responding to the valid FLP via the transmitter.

45. The method of claim 43, wherein the valid postamble increases the amount of time between the data portion of the FLP and a RLP sent from the battery operated device, allowing the battery operated device enough time to stabilize the transmitter on an appropriate return link channel.

46. The method of claim 43, wherein the battery operated device includes the transmitter having a phase locked loop (PLL).

47. The method of claim 46, wherein a valid preamble increases the amount of time that the battery operated device has to obtain a PLL lock on the appropriate return link channel.

48. The method of claim 46, wherein the valid postamble shortens the amount of time that the PLL is ON.

49. The method of claim 46, wherein the valid postamble reduces the amount of time the PLL is ON, thereby saving battery power when the battery operated device is not in the presence of a valid FLP.

50. The method of claim 46, wherein the valid postamble increases the amount of time between the data portion of the FLP and a RLP from the battery operated device, allowing the battery operated device enough time to obtain a PLL lock on the appropriate return link channel.

51. A method for conserving battery life in a battery operated device comprising:

receiving a repeated transmission that comprises a forward link packet (FLP), the FLP includes a data portion and a postamble;

awakening to a first state to determine whether the repeated transmission is likely a FLP by examining the postamble;

awakening to a second state if the transmission is likely a FLP;

reading the data portion when in the second state to determine whether a response from the battery operated device is requested; and

turning ON a phase locked loop (PLL) included in a transmitter of the battery operated device only after the response is determined to be requested, wherein the PLL locks onto an appropriate return link channel during a time period while the postamble is received.

52. The method of claim 51, further including determining whether the FLP is valid.

53. The method of claim 52, further including responding to the valid FLP.
