1. A system for delivering and retrieving multiple embolic filters which employs a single delivery and retrieval sheath, the system comprising:
- a first filter wire segment having a distal region and a proximal region;
a first embolic filter deployable from the first filter wire segment and operatively coupled to the distal region thereof;
a second filter wire segment having a distal region and a proximal region;
a second embolic filter deployable from the second filter wire segment and operatively coupled to the distal region thereof;
a delivery and retrieval sheath having a distal end, a proximal end, and at least one lumen therebetween configured and adapted to slidably contain a filter wire;
a first distal sheath segment associated with the distal end of the delivery and retrieval sheath, said first distal sheath segment having a lumen configured and adapted to contain the first embolic filter in a collapsed state; and
a second distal sheath segment associated with the distal end of the delivery and retrieval sheath, said second distal sheath segment having a lumen configured and adapted to contain the second embolic filter in a collapsed state,wherein the first filter wire segment passes at least in part through the lumen of the first distal sheath segment,further wherein the second filter wire segment passes at least in part through the lumen of the second distal sheath segment, andwherein the first and second distal sheath segments are configured and adapted to deploy the respective first and second filters at locations which are longitudinally displaced from each other.

Abstract
Vascular embolic filtering systems, as well as methods for using the same, are provided. In general, the subject invention includes a system comprised of a delivery and retrieval sheath adapted for delivering and retrieving multiple embolic filters, wherein the embolic filters are each operatively coupled to a distal region of a filter wire segment and are deployable within a target vessel.

7. A method of delivering and retrieving multiple embolic filters which employs a single delivery and retrieval sheath, the method comprising:
-
advancing a delivery and retrieval sheath having a distal end, a proximal end, and at least one lumen therebetween configured and adapted to slidably contain a filter wire, a first distal sheath segment having a lumen configured and adapted to contain a first embolic filter in a collapsed state, a second distal sheath segment having a lumen configured and adapted to contain a second embolic filter in a collapsed state to a point in a vessel downstream of a potential source of embolic debris, said first and second embolic filters being contained within their respective sheaths and operatively coupled to the respective distal regions of the first and second filter wire segments; moving the first embolic filter relative to the first distal sheath segment, thereby deploying the first embolic filter from the first filter wire segment; moving the second embolic filter relative to the second distal sheath segment, thereby deploying the second embolic filter from the second filter wire segment; passing blood through at least one of the first and second embolic filters; moving the first embolic filter relative to the first distal sheath segment, thereby receiving the first embolic filter within the first distal sheath segment in a collapsed state; moving the second embolic filter relative to the second distal sheath segment, thereby receiving the second embolic filter within the second distal sheath segment in a collapsed state; and
removing the delivery and retrieval sheath and first and second embolic filters from the vessel. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9, 10, 11)
