1. A system for in-situ active detection of asymmetry in a rotating structure that rotates about an axis of rotation, the system comprising:

  • at least one actuator for introducing mechanical force that imparts harmonic mechanical excitation on the rotating structure that is asynchronous to the speed of rotation of the rotating structure and perpendicular to the axis of rotation;

    at least one of a plurality of sensors for sensing a response from the excited rotating structure in the form of vibrations of the rotating structure;

    a signal processing unit for receiving the response and for analyzing the response to determine a presence of modulation of the imparted harmonic mechanical excitation, that causes vibration at a frequency that is a combination of both the harmonic mechanical excitation and the modulating speed of rotation.
