1. An analyte monitoring device, comprising:

  • a receiver unit for receiving one or more signals related to an analyte level detected by an electrochemical sensor, the receiver unit including a display to display an indication of the analyte level; and

an analyzer coupled to the display and the receiver unit, the analyzer having a processor and memory for storing instructions, which when executed by the processor, causes the analyzer to analyze data from the receiver unit, provide analyzed data to the display, wherein the instructions stored in the memory of the analyzer, which when executed by the processor, causes the analyzer to determine if calibration of the electrochemical sensor is appropriate by determining if the one or more signals from the sensor differ by less than a first threshold amount, by determining whether a rate of change of the analyte level exceeds a second threshold amount, and by comparing the analyzed data with expected measurements that correspond to physiologically relevant analyte levels.
