Abstract

An identification system includes a reader and one or more tags. The reader identifies tags such as radio frequency (RF) tags. The system divides a number space into n bins, wherein each bin is associated with m unique bits of the number space, and the number space contains the identification codes of the tags. A command is issued to test v bits of the number space. A response is received from a tag, wherein the response occurs when a first portion of an identification code of the tag matches the v bits of the number space, a timing of the response corresponds to a particular bin and m unique bits associated with the particular bin correspond to a second portion of the identification code.

Claims

1. An anti-collision method for radio frequency (RF) communication, said method comprising:

detecting by a first device an interfering RF field of a second device, the first device being in a quiescent mode; and

determining by the first device whether or not the interfering RF field is absent for a first interval of time;

entering an active mode by the first device after a second interval of time, the second interval of time being a pseudo-random delay period, if the RF field of the second device for the first interval of time is absent.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first device in the quiescent mode transmits no RF power.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the first device in the quiescent mode transmits at less than approximately 10% of a maximum RF power level.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first device in the active mode transmits at more than approximately 10% of a maximum RF power level.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first device in the active mode transmits at a maximum RF power level.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first device frequency hops.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the pseudo-random delay period is less than or equal to approximately 19 ms.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the interval of time is approximately 1 ms.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the first device is located at a point of purchase.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the first device is used for transactions for at least one of aircraft baggage, tickets, passes and licenses.

11. An anti-collision method for radio frequency (RF) communication, said method comprising:

determining by a device whether or not an interfering RF field is absent for a first interval of time, the device being in a quiescent mode during the first interval of time and a second interval of time that is a pseudo-random delay period; and

entering an active mode by the device after the second interval of time, if the interfering RF field for the first interval of time is absent,

wherein the device in the quiescent mode transmits at less than approximately 10% of a maximum RF power level.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the device in the quiescent mode transmits no RF field.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the pseudo-random delay period is less than or equal to approximately 19 ms.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the time interval is approximately 1 ms.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein the device in the active mode communicates with a tag.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein a data rate from the tag is at least approximately 256 KHz.

17. The method of claim 11, wherein the device is located at a point of purchase.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the point of purchase is a checkout counter in a store.

19. An anti-collision method for radio frequency (RF) communication, said method comprising:

determining by a device whether or not an interfering RF field is absent for a first interval of time, the device being in a quiescent mode during the first interval of time and a second interval of time that is a pseudo-random delay period; and

entering an active mode by the device after the pseudo-random delay period, if the interfering RF field for the first interval of time is absent,

wherein the device in the quiescent mode transmits less than approximately 10% of a maximum RF power level, and

wherein the device is used for a purchase of a product.

20. A reader to identify tags, comprising:

a receiver to detect whether or not an interfering RF field of another reader is absent for a first interval of time; and

a transmitter configured to operate in a quiescent mode when the receiver detects the presence of the interfering RF field and, the transmitter is configured to enter an active mode after a second interval of time that is a pseudo-random delay if the interfering RF field of another reader for the first interval of time is absent.

21. The reader of claim 20, wherein the transmitter in the quiescent mode is configured to transmit no RF power.

22. The reader of claim 20, wherein the transmitter in the quiescent mode is configured to transmit at less than approximately 10% of a maximum RF power level.

23. The reader of claim 20, wherein the transmitter in the active mode is configured to transmit at more than approximately 10% of a maximum RF power level.

24. The reader of claim 20, wherein the transmitter in the active mode is configured to transmit at a maximum RF power level.

25. The reader of claim 20, wherein the transmitter and receiver are configured to frequency hop.

26. The reader of claim 20, wherein the pseudo-random delay period is less than or equal to approximately 19 ms.

27. The reader of claim 20, wherein the interval of time is approximately 1 ms.

28. The reader of claim 20, wherein the reader is located at a point of purchase.

29. The reader of claim 20, wherein the reader is used for transactions for at least one of aircraft baggage, tickets, passes and licenses.

30. A reader configured to avoid RF collisions with other readers, comprising:

a receiver configured to determine whether or not an interfering RF field is absent for a first interval of time;

a transmitter configured to operate in a quiescent mode during the first interval of time and a second interval of time that is a pseudo-random delay period, to transmit in the quiescent mode at less than approximately 10% of a maximum RF power level, and the transmitter configured to enter an active mode after the second interval of time, if the interfering RF field for the first interval of time is absent; and

a processor to control data communications between the transmitter, the receiver and a tag.

31. The reader of claim 30, wherein the transmitter in the quiescent mode is configured to transmit no RF field.

32. The reader of claim 30, wherein the pseudo-random delay period is less than or equal to approximately 19 ms.

33. The reader of claim 30, wherein the time interval is approximately 1 ms.

34. The reader of claim 30, wherein the receiver and the transmitter in the active mode are configured to communicate with the tag.

35. The reader of claim 34, wherein a data rate from the tag is at least approximately 256 KHz.

36. The reader of claim 34, wherein the reader is located at a point of purchase.

37. The reader of claim 36, wherein the point of purchase is a checkout counter in a store.

38. An anti-collision reader for radio frequency (RF) communication, comprising:

a transceiver configured to determine whether or not an interfering RF field is absent for a first interval of time, wherein the transceiver is configured to operate in a quiescent mode during the first interval of time and a second interval of time that is a pseudo-random delay period, wherein the transceiver in the quiescent mode is configured to transmit at less than approximately 10% of a maximum RF power level, wherein the transceiver is configured to enter an active mode after the second interval of time, if the interfering RF field for the first interval of time is absent, and

wherein the reader is used for a purchase of a product.

39. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium including instructions that, when read by a machine, cause the machine to perform anti-collision operations in radio-frequency (RF) data communications, comprising:

detecting by a first device an interfering RF field of a second device, the first device being in a quiescent mode;

determining by the first device whether or not the interfering RF field is absent for a first interval of time; and

entering an active mode by the first device after a second interval of time, the second interval of time being a pseudo-random delay period if the RF field of the second device for the first interval of time is absent.

40. The machine-readable medium of claim 39, wherein the first device in the quiescent mode transmits no RF power.

41. The machine-readable medium of claim 39, wherein the first device in the quiescent mode transmits at less than approximately 10% of a maximum RF power level.

42. The machine-readable medium of claim 39, wherein the first device in the active mode transmits at more than approximately 10% of a maximum RF power level.

43. The machine-readable medium of claim 39, wherein the first device in the active mode transmits at a maximum RF power level.

44. The machine-readable medium of claim 39, wherein the first device frequency hops.

45. The machine-readable medium of claim 39, wherein the pseudo-random delay period is less than or equal to approximately 19 ms.

46. The machine-readable medium of claim 39, wherein the interval of time is approximately 1 ms.

47. The machine-readable medium of claim 39, wherein the first device is located at a point of purchase.

48. The machine-readable medium of claim 39, wherein the first device is used for transactions for at least one of aircraft baggage, tickets, passes and licenses.

49. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium including instructions that, when read by a machine, cause the machine to perform anti-collision in radio-frequency (RF) data communications, comprising:

determining by a device whether or not an interfering RF field is absent for a first interval of time, the device being in a quiescent mode during the first interval of time and a second interval of time that is a pseudo-random delay period; and

entering an active mode by the device after the second interval of time, if the interfering RF field for the first interval of time is absent,

wherein the device in the quiescent mode transmits at less than approximately 10% of a maximum RF power level.

50. The machine-readable medium of claim 49, wherein the device in the quiescent mode transmits no RF field.

51. The machine-readable medium of claim 49, wherein the pseudo-random delay period is less than or equal to approximately 19 ms.

52. The machine-readable medium of claim 49, wherein the time interval is approximately 1 ms.

53. The machine-readable medium of claim 49, wherein the device in the active mode communicates with a tag.

54. The machine-readable medium of claim 53, wherein a data rate from the tag is at least approximately 256 KHz.

55. The machine-readable medium of claim 49, wherein the device is located at a point of purchase.

56. The machine-readable medium of claim 55, wherein the point of purchase is a checkout counter in a store.

57. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium including instructions that, when read by a machine, cause the machine to perform anti-collision in radio-frequency (RF) data communications, comprising:

determining by a device whether or not an interfering RF field is absent for a first interval of time, the device being in a quiescent mode during the first interval of time and a second interval of time that is pseudo-random delay period; and

entering an active mode by the device after the second interval of time, if the interfering RF field for the first interval of time is absent

wherein the device in the quiescent mode transmits less than approximately 10% of a maximum RF power level, and

wherein the device is used for a purchase of a product.
