Anchoring system for a medical article
First Claim
1. A retainer for securing a medical article to a patient, the medical article including at least one aperture, the retainer comprising:
- a base for securing relative to the skin of a patient;
a first retention member being immovably disposed relative to the base and being configured to be inserted through the corresponding aperture of the medical article; and
a second retention member having a curvilinear shape, at least a portion of the second retention member being positioned at a generally fixed height with respect to the base and lying generally normal relative to the first retention member to form a receiving space so as to permit at least a portion of the medical article to be placed within the receiving space when the medical article is secured within the retainer, the first retention member and the second retention member each extending away from the base and the patient'"'"'s skin when the base is secured relative to the skin of the patient.

Abstract
An anchoring system includes a simply-structured device which permits a portion of a catheter or similar medical article to be easily anchored to a patient, desirably without the use of tape or needles and suturing. The anchoring system desirably includes a retainer and an anchor pad. The retainer is sized and configured to accept and retain a section of a catheter within the anchoring system and desirably includes a pair of posts and a clip. The posts are sized and configured to releasably accept holes formed in the catheter or catheter fitting. The clip is sized and configured to releasably accept a portion of the catheter. The anchor pad secures the retainer to a patient'"'"'s skin.

12. A retainer for securing a medical article to a body of a patient, the medical article having a fitting that includes a pair of laterally extending wings, each laterally extending wing including an aperture, comprising:
-
a mounting layer having a mounting surface at least partially covered by an adhesive for attaching the securement device to the body of the patient; a base surface accessible from an opposite side of the mounting layer; first and second retention surfaces each being distanced in a transverse direction from the base surface by a sufficient distance so as to define a receiving space therebetween, the receiving space being of a size so as to releasably accept at least a portion of the laterally extending wings, the first and second retention surfaces being arranged relative to each other so as to define an entranceway into the receiving space along a longitudinal axis, the entranceway having a lateral width less than a width of the fitting; and first and second posts disposed on the base surface and extending in the transverse direction, the first and second posts being positioned on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis, each post being configured to be inserted through the aperture of one of the laterally extending wings. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)

20. A retainer for a medical article having an elongated body and a pair of laterally extending surfaces, each laterally extending surface including an aperture, comprising:
-
an anchor pad having a mounting surface at least partially covered by an adhesive layer for attaching the securement device to the patient'"'"'s body, and a receiving surface oriented so as to face away from the patient'"'"'s body, the receiving surface including a longitudinally extending section along which at least a portion of the medical article lies when secured by the securement device; a pair of retention surfaces being spaced in a transverse direction from the receiving surface by a sufficient distance to releasably accept at least a portion of the laterally extending surfaces between the pair of retention surfaces and the receiving surface, inner edges of the pair of retention surfaces defining an entranceway along a longitudinal axis, the pair of retention surfaces and the receiving surface together defining a receiving space, the receiving space having a lateral dimension which is greater than a lateral dimension of the entranceway, wherein at least a portion of the laterally extending surfaces of the medical article is retained within the receiving space; and first and second posts disposed on the receiving surface and generally extending in the transverse direction, the first and second posts being positioned on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis, the first and second posts each having a securing portion arranged toward a distal end of the post, each post being configured to be inserted through the aperture of one of the laterally extending surfaces. - View Dependent Claims (21)
