Abstract

An electrical penetrator assembly has a ceramic housing with a through bore, a first electrical conductor extending through a first end of the bore and terminating short of a second end of the bore and having an outer end engageable with a first cable, and a second electrical conductor extending through a second end of the bore and terminating short of the first end of the bore, the second conductor having an outer end engageable with a second cable. The conductors are in electrical communication at their inner ends and at least one of the conductors is movable relative to the other conductor to accommodate expansion and contraction as a result of temperature variations, and first and second seals extend between respective ends of the ceramic housing and the first and second conductor, respectively.

Claims

1. An electrical penetrator, comprising:

an outer housing of non-conductive, insulating material having a through bore and opposite first and second ends;

a first electrical conductor extending through the first end of the bore and terminating short of the second end of the bore and having an outer end engageable with a first cable;

a second electrical conductor extending through the second end of the bore and terminating short of the first end of the bore, the second conductor having an outer end engageable with a second cable;

each conductor having an inner end which is in electrical communication with the other conductor, and at least one of the conductors being movable relative to the other conductor while maintaining electrical communication between the conductors; and

a first hermetic seal extending between the first end of the housing and the first electrical conductor and a second hermetic seal extending between the second end of the housing and the second electrical conductor.

2. The penetrator of claim 1, wherein the seals are of conductive material.

3. The penetrator of claim 1, wherein the seals are J-shaped.

4. The penetrator of claim 1, wherein the seals are Z-shaped.

5. The penetrator of claim 1, wherein each seal comprises a metal sleeve.

6. The penetrator of claim 5, wherein each sleeve is brazed to the respective end of the housing and brazed or welded to the respective electrical conductor.

7. The penetrator of claim 1, wherein the first conductor has a bore at its inner end and the second conductor has an inner end portion which is telescopically engaged in the bore to accommodate relative movement between the first and second conductors.

The penetrator of claim 7, wherein the bore in the first conductor has an inner surface and the inner end portion of the second conductor has an opposing outer surface spaced from the inner surface of the bore, and a contact band is secured to one of the opposing surfaces and in sliding contact with the other opposing surface.

9. The penetrator of claim 7, wherein the first conductor is of larger diameter than the second conductor.

10. The penetrator of claim 9, wherein the through bore has a first portion of a first diameter which slidably receives the first conductor and a second portion of a second diameter which slidably receives the second conductor.

11. The penetrator of claim 10, wherein the through bore has a tapered step between the first and second diameter portions.

12. The penetrator of claim 1, further comprising an inner conductive or semi-conductive coating layer on the through bore which provides a clearance between the conductors and the insulating housing.

13. The penetrator of claim 12, wherein the inner coating layer extends over at least part of each of the opposite ends of the housing.

14. The penetrator of claim 1, wherein the conductors are of copper material.

15. The penetrator of claim 1, wherein the housing is of ceramic material.

16. The penetrator of claim 1, wherein the housing has an outer surface of stepped diameter comprising a larger diameter central portion, smaller diameter first and second end portions, and first and second shoulders between the central portion and the first and second end portion, respectively.

17. The penetrator of claim 16, wherein the shoulders are each inclined at a predetermined angle towards the respective end portions.

18. The penetrator of claim 17, wherein the angle of each shoulder is in the range from 40 to 75 degrees.

19. The penetrator of claim 18, wherein the angle of each shoulder is 60 degrees.

20. The penetrator of claim 16, further comprising an outer coating of conductive material extending over the larger diameter central portion and at least part of the smaller diameter first and second end portions of the housing.

21. The penetrator of claim 20, wherein the outer coating has a first end spaced from the first end of the insulator housing and a second end spaced from the second end of the insulator housing.

The penetrator of claim 21, further comprising a first sealing sleeve of conductive material extending between the insulator housing and the first conductor at the first end of the insulator housing and a second sealing sleeve of conductive material extending between the insulator housing and the second conductor at the second end of the insulator housing.

The penetrator of claim 22, wherein the first sealing sleeve extends over the outer surface of the insulator housing adjacent the first end of the housing and terminates at a location spaced from the first end of the outer coating, and the second sealing sleeve extends over the outer surface of the insulator housing adjacent the second end of the housing and terminates at a location spaced from the second end of the outer coating.

The penetrator of claim 1, wherein the first conductor comprises a flexible conductor and the second conductor comprises a solid metal conductor, the conductors having inner ends which are secured together and the flexible conductor being adapted to move to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction.

25. The penetrator of claim 2, wherein the seals are brazed to the housing.

26. The penetrator of claim 2, wherein the seals are of an alloy metal having a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than the conductors.

27. An electrical penetrator assembly, comprising:

an outer sleeve of non-conductive, insulating material having a through bore and opposite first and second ends;

an electrical conductor shaft extending through the sleeve and having opposite first and second ends extending outwardly from opposite ends of the sleeve; and

an intermediate layer of at least partially conductive material between the shaft and outer sleeve.

28. The assembly of claim 27, wherein the intermediate layer comprises a coating of semi-conductive material on the inner surface of the sleeve through bore.

29. The assembly of claim 27, wherein the intermediate layer comprises a layer of semi-conductive material which is bonded to the inner surface of the sleeve through the bore.

30. The assembly of claim 27, wherein the intermediate layer comprises a coating of conductive material different from the material of the conductor shaft.

31. The assembly of claim 27, wherein the intermediate layer is of rigid semi-conductive material which is substantially void-free.

32. The assembly of claim 27, wherein the conductor shaft comprises first and second conductor portions, the first conductor portion extending through the first end of the bore and terminating short of the second end of the bore and having an outer end engageable with a first cable, the second conductor portion extending through the second end of the bore and terminating short of the first end of the bore and having an outer end engageable with a second cable, and the conductor portions have inner ends which are in electrical communication inside the through bore, at least one of the conductor portions being movable relative to the other conductor portion.

33. The assembly of claim 32, wherein the first and second conductor portions comprise metal conductor pins having telescopically engaged inner ends.

34. The assembly of claim 32, wherein the first conductor comprises a flexible conductor and the second conductor comprises a rigid metal conductor.

35. The assembly of claim 32, further comprising a first metal sealing sleeve secured to the first end of the outer sleeve and to the first conductor portion to form a first hermetic seal, and a second metal sealing sleeve secured to the second end of the outer sleeve and to the secured conductor portion to form a second hermetic seal.

36. The assembly of claim 35, wherein the first and second sealing sleeves are secured to the respective ends of the outer sleeve and the respective conductor by brazed or welded connections.

37. An electrical penetrator unit, comprising:

an outer penetrator housing having a through bore; and

a penetrator pin assembly extending through the bore in the outer housing;

the penetrator pin assembly comprising an outer sleeve of non-conductive, insulating material having a through bore and opposite first and second ends, an electrical conductor shaft extending through the sleeve and have opposite first and second ends extending outwardly from opposite ends of the sleeve, the conductor shaft comprising first and second conductor portions extending inwardly through the first and second ends of the sleeve, respectively, the conductor portions being in electrical communication inside the sleeve, a first hermetic seal extending between the first conductor portion and the outer sleeve and a second hermetic seal extending between the second conductor portion and the outer sleeve.

38. The penetrator unit of claim 37, further comprising an outer conductive layer extending over at least part of the length of the outer sleeve between the sleeve and outer housing through bore.

39. The penetrator unit of claim 37, further comprising a retainer plate of rigid material secured in the housing through bore which retains the penetrator pin assembly in the housing, the retainer plate having a bore through which part of the penetrator pin assembly extends.

40. The penetrator unit of claim 39, further comprising an outer conductive layer extending over at least part of the length of the outer sleeve including the part of the sleeve which extends through the bore in the retainer plate, the conductive layer being in direct physical contact with the bore in the retainer plate.

The penetrator unit of claim 37, wherein the outer sleeve is of stepped diameter and has an enlarged portion, first and second end portions at opposite ends of the enlarged portion which are of smaller diameter than the enlarged portion, and first and second shoulders between the enlarged portion and the first and second end portion, respectively.

The penetrator unit of claim 41, wherein the retainer plate engages over the penetrator pin assembly at the first shoulder and the opening in the retainer plate has an internal shape substantially matching the shape of the first end portion, first shoulder, and enlarged portion of the outer sleeve at the first shoulder.

43. The penetrator unit of claim 42, wherein the first shoulder and opposing portion of the retainer plate opening are inclined at a predetermined angle.

44. The penetrator unit of claim 43, further comprising an intermediate layer between the first shoulder and opposing portion of the retainer plate opening, the intermediate layer being of softer material than the outer sleeve and retainer plate.

45. The penetrator unit of claim 37, wherein the hermetic seals comprise sealing sleeves of conductive material.

46. The penetrator unit of claim 45 wherein the sealing sleeves and conductor shaft are of metal and the outer sleeve is of ceramic material.

47. The penetrator unit of claim 46 wherein the first and second sealing sleeves are each secured to the outer ceramic sleeve by brazed joints, and are secured to the respective conductor portions by brazed or welded joints.

48. The penetrator unit of claim 37 further comprising an intermediate layer of at least partially conductive material between the outer sleeve and conductor shaft.

49. The penetrator unit of claim 48, wherein the intermediate layer is of semi-conductive material.

50. The penetrator unit of claim 48, wherein the intermediate layer is of a conductive material different from the conductor shaft.
