1. A method for treating an elongated metallic medical instrument, comprising:

  • subjecting a plurality of selected sections of the medical instrument to a heat treating process so as to alter the torque characteristics of the plurality of selected sections, the plurality of selected sections of the medical instrument being adjacent to and separated from one another by a plurality of unselected sections that are not subjected to the heat treating process;

    wherein the heat treating process includes localized annealing.
