1. A method for treating a patient for sleep disordered breathing using a ventilator system which includes a controller for controlling delivered pressure and a ventilator having a blower, comprising the steps of:
- applying a first constant treatment pressure to a patient during a first ventilation session;
detecting and recording apnea and hypopnea events based on a flow signal derived from at least one of the speed of the blower or the current to the blower during said first ventilation session;
calculating a breathing index dependent upon the recorded apnea and hypopnea events;
determining a second ventilator pressure to be applied in a second ventilation session for said patient, said second ventilation pressure dependent upon a comparison of the breathing index to a threshold; and
delivering a second constant pressure treatment to the patient during the second ventilation session,wherein the first ventilation session and the second ventilation session occur on different nights.

Abstract
A method is disclosed for operating a device that treats sleep disordered breathing (SDB) during successive treatment sessions, where the device provides continuous positive airway pressure during sleep. The method includes the steps of applying a constant treatment pressure during a first session and deriving a sleep disorder index (SOI) representative of the number of SOB episodes that occurred during the first session. If the treatment pressure should be increased based upon the derived SOI, it is increased during a second, subsequent session.

14. A system for treating sleep disordered breathing during successive treatment sessions, wherein the system provides continuous positive airway pressure during sleep, the system comprising:

a blower and a blower controller; a mask for communicating pressurized air between said blower and a patient; and at least one sensor for sensing signals indicative of pressure and flow, wherein the at least one sensor is a motor speed sensor or a motor current sensor, and delivering said signals to said blower controller, said blower controller; controls a first constant treatment pressure to be applied during a first ventilation session; detects and records apnea and hypopnea events during said first ventilation session based on the at least one sensor; calculates a breathing index dependent upon the recorded apnea and hypopnea events; and delivers a second constant treatment pressure in a second ventilation session for said patient, said second constant treatment pressure determined by comparing said breathing index to a threshold, wherein the first ventilation session and the second ventilation session occur on different nights. - View Dependent Claims (15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26)
