Abstract

A fluid control system for use with a patient support apparatus is moveable from a first height to a second height. The system includes a lift arm and a substantially upright cylinder. A first end of the lift arm is pivotably coupled to a base member and a second end of the lift arm is coupled to a chair structure. The cylinder assembly has a base portion and an extendable member configured to contact and support the lift arm. The cylinder assembly includes a bypass valve having a first end in fluid contact with an upper reservoir and a second end in fluid contact with a lower reservoir.

Claims

1. A patient support apparatus moveable from a first height to a second height, the apparatus comprising:

a chair structure;

a base member;

a lift arm with a first end and a second end, the first end of the lift arm being pivotably coupled to the base member and the second end of the lift arm being coupled to the chair structure; and

a cylinder assembly having a base portion and an extendable member configured to contact and support the lift arm, the extendable member being moveable between at least first and second positions, the cylinder assembly comprising a valve having a first end in fluid contact with an upper reservoir and a second end in fluid contact with a lower reservoir,

wherein the valve is configured to open under certain predetermined conditions and to permit flow between the upper and lower reservoir.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the cylinder assembly is fixed in a substantially upright configuration and movement of the extendable member from the first position to the second position causes the lift arm to pivot about the base member.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein a total fluid volume contained in the upper and lower reservoirs remains substantially the same regardless of the position of the extendable member.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the valve is a bypass valve positioned within the base portion so that when the extendable member reaches a pre-determined extension limit the bypass valve permits fluid to flow between the upper and lower reservoirs.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the valve is a relief valve positioned within the base portion so that when a pressure level in one of the upper and lower reservoirs reaches a predetermined limit, the relief valve permits fluid to flow between the upper and lower reservoirs.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein, when the extendable member is in the first position, the first end of the lift arm is spaced above a ground level by a first height and an upper end of the extendable member is spaced above the ground level by a second height, the second height being greater than the first height.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the lift arm comprises a pin member, and the extendable member comprises an upper end that has an opening that receives the pin member in a pivotable engagement,

wherein the pin member is positioned on the lift arm at a location closer to first end of the lift arm than to the second end of the lift arm.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the extendable member of the cylinder assembly is a single extendable member.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a link arm coupled to the base member and to the chair structure, the link arm being substantially parallel to the lift arm.
