Abstract

A system and method for receiving a signal, comprising an input adapted to receive a radio frequency signal having a strong interferer; a signal generator, adapted to produce a representation of the interferer as an analog signal generated based on an oversampled digital representation thereof; and a component adapted to cancel the strong interferer from radio frequency signal based on the generated analog signal to produce a modified radio frequency signal substantially absent the interferer. The system typically has a nonlinear component that either saturates or produces distortion from the strong interferer, which is thereby reduced. The system preferably employs high speed circuits which digitize and process radio frequency signals without analog mixers.

Claims

1. A receiver comprising:

an input configured to receive an analog radio frequency input signal within a radio frequency band comprising a frequency in excess of 500 MHz, comprising a modulated information signal and at least one additional signal;

a subtractor configured to receive a representation of the analog radio frequency signal and a subtraction signal, and to produce a subtractor output representing a combination of the analog radio frequency signal and a subtraction signal, the subtractor output comprising an intermodulation distortion product, wherein in a presence of an appropriate subtraction signal received by the subtractor, the intermodulation distortion product is generated at least 3 dB attenuated in amplitude with respect to the intermodulation distortion product produced in the absence of the appropriate subtraction signal;

a digitally controlled signal generator, configured to produce the appropriate subtraction signal as a radio frequency signal, comprising a representation of the at least one additional signal synchronized with the at least one additional signal, such that the subtractor diminishes an amplitude of the at least one additional signal and the intermodulation distortion product at the subtractor output; and

a digitizer having an instantaneous bandwidth of at least 10 MHz, receiving the subtractor output.

2. The receiver according to claim 1, wherein the appropriate subtraction signal is a radio frequency signal comprising a frequency in excess of 500 MHz.

3. The receiver according to claim 1, wherein the appropriate subtraction signal has an amplitude at the subtractor in excess of the modulated information signal.

The receiver according to claim 1, wherein the appropriate subtraction signal is generated by the digitally controlled signal generator, in dependence an output of the digitizer, as an oversampled radio frequency signal within the radio frequency band comprising a frequency in excess of 500 MHz.

5. The receiver according to claim 1, wherein the digitzer produces a digital information signal comprising at least the information from the information signal.

6. The receiver according to claim 1, wherein the radio frequency band has a bandwidth of at least 18 MHz.

7. The receiver according to claim 1, wherein the radio frequency band comprises a frequency greater than 1 GHz.

The receiver according to claim 1, wherein a bandwidth of the modulated information signal overlaps a bandwidth of the at least one additional signal, such that a frequency domain filter cannot separate the modulated information signal from the at least one additional signal without loss of information, and wherein an amplitude of the at least one additional signal is sufficient in an absence of the appropriate subtraction signal to saturate the digitizer.

9. The receiver according to claim 1, wherein the subtractor comprises a superconducting element.

10. The receiver according to claim 1, wherein the subtractor comprises a linear flux subtractor configured to subtract the subtraction signal from the analog radio frequency signal substantially without introduction of non-linear distortion.

11. The receiver according to claim 1, wherein the appropriate subtraction signal is adapted to attenuate the at least one additional signal by at least 20 dB.

12. The receiver according to claim 1, wherein the digitizer has oversamples a representation of the subtractor output comprising a frequency in excess of 500 MHz.

13. The receiver according to claim 1, further comprising an element having a nonlinear transfer function, configured to receive the analog radio frequency signal and cause harmonic distortion before receipt by the subtractor.

18. The method according to claim 1, wherein the radio frequency band comprises a frequency greater than 1 GHz.

19. The receiver according to claim 1, wherein the subtractor comprises a linear superconducting flux subtractor element configured to subtract the subtraction signal from the analog radio frequency signal substantially without introduction of non-linear distortion.

14. A method of receiving an information signal, comprising:

receiving an analog radio frequency input signal within a radio frequency band comprising a frequency in excess of 500 MHz, comprising a modulated information signal and at least one additional signal;

receiving a representation of the analog radio frequency signal and a subtraction signal as inputs to a subtractor, and producing a subtractor output, representing a combination of the analog radio frequency signal and a subtraction signal, the subtractor output comprising an intermodulation distortion product, wherein in a presence of an appropriate subtraction signal received by the subtractor, the intermodulation distortion product is generated at least 3 dB attenuated in amplitude with respect to the intermodulation distortion product produced in the absence of the appropriate subtraction signal; and

producing the appropriate subtraction signal with a digitally controlled signal generator, as a radio frequency signal, comprising a representation of the at least one additional signal synchronized with the at least one additional signal, such that the subtractor diminishes an amplitude of the at least one additional signal and the intermodulation distortion product at the subtractor output.

15. The method according to claim 14, wherein the subtractor output comprises an instantaneous bandwidth of at least 10 MHz, and the appropriate subtraction signal attenuates the at least one additional signal by at least 20 dB.

The method according to claim 15, wherein the appropriate subtraction signal is a radio frequency signal comprising a frequency in excess of 500 MHz, generated by the digitally controlled signal generator, in dependence an output of the digitizer, as an oversampled radio frequency signal within the radio frequency band comprising a frequency in excess of 500 MHz.

The method according to claim 14, further comprising digitizing a signal comprising a frequency in excess of 500 MHz corresponding to the subtractor output to generate an oversampled digital information signal comprising at least the information from the information signal, wherein a bandwidth of the modulated information signal overlaps a bandwidth of the at least one additional signal, such that a frequency domain filter cannot separate the modulated information signal from the at least one additional signal without loss of at least a portion of the information.

20. A receiver comprising:

an input configured to receive an analog radio frequency input signal within a radio frequency band having a bandwidth and a frequency in excess of 500 MHz, comprising a modulated information signal and at least one modulated interferor;

a subtractor configured to receive a subtraction signal and a representation of the analog radio frequency signal, and to produce a subtractor output representing a combination of the analog radio frequency signal and the subtraction signal, and an intermodulation distortion product having spurs within the bandwidth of the radio frequency band, wherein in a presence of an appropriate subtraction signal received by the subtractor, a ratio of the modulated information signal to the at least one interferor in the subtractor output is increased by at least 20 dB;

a digital signal generator, configured to produce the appropriate subtraction signal, comprising a synchronized representation of the at least one modulated interferor; and

a digitizer having an instantaneous bandwidth of at least 10 MHz, receiving the subtractor output.
