Abstract

There is provided an energy delivery device comprising a storage device, a discharge circuit and a disarm circuit. The discharge circuit comprises a switch electrically connected to the storage device, and is selectively operable to deliver energy from the storage device to a load, e.g., a patient needing defibrillation, preferably in a multiphasic waveform. The disarm circuit comprises the switch. Preferably, the discharge circuit comprises an H-bridge circuit. There are also provided delivery devices: which comprise a shoot-through elimination circuit; which include housing elements which, when assembled, cause electrical connection between respective components; which include a housing having a small volume and an energy storage device having a large capacitance; which comprise a shunt circuit which, when activated, prevents switching of a switch. There are also provided methods of assembly and disassembly of an energy delivery unit and methods of delivering energy to a load.

Claims

1. A defibrillator comprising:

a housing;

a discharge circuit positioned in said housing for selectively delivering an energy pulse to a patient; and

an energy storage device in said housing,

wherein a wireless detachable electrical connection is provided between said discharge circuit and said energy storage device and wherein said discharge circuit comprises an H-bride circuit that generates multiphasic waveforms.

2. A defibrillator as recited in claim 1, wherein said discharge circuit further comprises a controller, a control circuit, and at least a first delivery switch and a second delivery switch, wherein said first and second delivery switches are each independently controlled by said controller.

3. A defibrillator as recited in claim 2, said controller further comprising a controller power source, and a disarm circuit, wherein said disarm circuit is automatically operable to reduce energy in said energy storage device when said controller power source is not powering said controller.

4. A defibrillator as recited in claim 3, wherein said controller automatically causes said disarm circuit to reduce energy in said energy storage device when a level of stored energy in said energy storage device exceeds a predetermined energy level.

5. A defibrillator as recited in claim 3, wherein said energy storage device, said discharge circuit and said disarm circuit are positioned within a housing having a volume of not more than about 130 cubic inches.

6. A defibrillator as recited in claim 5, wherein said housing has a box-like configuration having a length dimension of about eight inches, a width dimension of about seven inches, and a height dimension in a range of from about two inches to about three inches.

7. A defibrillator as recited in claim 1, wherein said discharge circuit is configured to provide a multiphasic waveform for said at least one energy pulse.

8. A defibrillator as recited in claim 1, wherein said multiphasic waveform is a truncated exponential multiphasic waveform.

9. A defibrillator as recited in claim 1, wherein said energy storage device is maximized in rating to allow voltage for said discharge circuit to be minimized.

10. A defibrillator as recited in claim 9, wherein said maximized rating of said energy storage device allows for a voltage of at least about 1300 volts to be developed for said discharge circuit.

11. A defibrillator as recited in claim 1, wherein said housing has a volume of not more than about 140 cubic inches and said rating of said energy storage device is at least about 250 microfarads.

12. A defibrillator as recited in claim 1, further comprising a disarm circuit which selectively reduces energy stored in said energy storage device, said disarm circuit and said discharge circuit sharing at least electronic component.

13. A defibrillator comprising:

a housing;

a discharge circuit positioned in said housing for selectively delivering an energy pulse to a patient; and

an energy storage device in said housing,

wherein said housing comprises a first housing element and a second housing element, said housing having an assembled orientation in which said first housing element and said second housing element are engaged with each other, said discharge circuit being provided on said first housing element and said energy storage device being provided on said second housing element,

said discharge circuit and said energy storage device being slidably connectable for electrically connecting said discharge circuit and said energy storage device in engaging said first and second housing elements with each other,

said discharge circuit and said energy storage device comprising electrical contacts and cam surfaces that engage each other when said first and second housing elements are engaged with each other to provide electrical connection between said discharge circuit and said energy storage device.

14. A defibrillator as recited in claim 13, wherein at least one of said contacts has a resilient configuration for caroming against and biasing into engagement with at least another one of said contacts.

15. A defibrillator as recited in claim 13, wherein said discharge circuit further comprises a controller, a control circuit, and at least a first delivery switch and a second delivery switch, wherein said first and second delivery switches are each independently controlled by said controller.

16. A defibrillator as recited in claim 15, said controller further comprising a controller power source, and a disarm circuit, wherein said disarm circuit is automatically operable to reduce energy in said energy storage device when said controller power source is not powering said controller.

17. A defibrillator as recited in claim 16, wherein said controller automatically causes said disarm circuit to reduce energy in said energy storage device when a level of stored energy in said energy storage device exceeds a predetermined energy level.

18. A defibrillator as recited in claim 16, wherein said energy storage device, said discharge circuit and said disarm circuit are positioned within a housing having a volume of not more than about 130 cubic inches.

19. A defibrillator as recited in claim 18, wherein said housing has a box-like configuration having a length dimension of about eight inches, a width dimension of about seven inches, and a height dimension in a range of from about two inches to about three inches.

20. A defibrillator as recited in claim 13, wherein said discharge circuit is configured to provide a multiphasic waveform for said at least one energy pulse.

21. A defibrillator as recited in claim 13, wherein said discharge circuit comprises an H-bridge circuit that generates multiphasic waveforms.

22. A defibrillator as recited in claim 21, wherein said multiphasic waveform is a truncated exponential multiphasic waveform.

23. A defibrillator as recited in claim 13, wherein said energy storage device is maximized in rating to allow voltage for said discharge circuit to be minimized.

24. A defibrillator as recited in claim 23, wherein said maximized rating of said energy storage device allows for a voltage of at least about 1300 volts to be developed for said discharge circuit.

25. A defibrillator as recited in claim 13, wherein said housing has a volume of not more than about 140 cubic inches and said rating of said energy storage device is at least about 250 microfarads.

26. A defibrillator as recited in claim 13, further comprising a disarm circuit which selectively reduces energy stored in said energy storage device, said disarm circuit and said discharge circuit sharing at least electronic component.

27. An energy delivery device for delivering an energy pulse to a patient, said energy delivery device comprising:

an energy storage device;

an energy discharge circuit comprising a plurality of delivery switches, said delivery switches being selectively operable to deliver to the patient energy from said energy storage device in a form of at least one energy pulse in a waveform, each of said delivery switches having an on condition and an off condition for enabling delivery of energy in different stages of said waveform;

at least a first turn on circuit for a first switch of said plurality of delivery switches and a second turn on circuit for a second switch of said plurality of delivery switches;

a controller that shifts at least said first switch of said plurality of delivery switches to an on condition and at least said second switch of said plurality of delivery switches to an off condition for generating a first waveform phase and shifts at least said second switch to an on condition and at least said first switch to an off condition for generating a second waveform phase;

a first shoot-through elimination circuit that is operable to keep said first switch in an off condition when said second switch is shifted to an on condition by operation of said controller; and

a second shoot-through elimination circuit that is operable to keep said second switch in an off condition when said first switch is shifted to an on condition by operation of said controller.

An energy delivery device as recited in claim 27, wherein said first switch includes parasitic components, and said first shoot-through elimination circuit comprises a shunting circuit that avoids causing said first switch to be shifted to an on condition because of said parasitic components with shifting of said second switch to an on condition.

An energy delivery device as recited in claim 27, wherein said second switch includes parasitic components, and said second shoot-through elimination circuit comprises a shunting circuit that avoids causing said second switch to be shifted to an on condition because of said parasitic components with shifting of said first switch to an on condition.

30. An energy delivery device as recited in claim 27, wherein said first shoot-through elimination circuit includes a clamping element to avoid voltage build-up in said first switch.

31. An energy delivery device as recited in claim 27, wherein said second shoot-through elimination circuit includes a clamping element to avoid voltage build-up in said second switch.

32. An energy delivery device as recited in claim 27, wherein said discharge circuit comprises an H-bridge circuit, and said plurality of switches comprises a pair of high switches and a pair of low switches, with said first switch being one of said high switches.

33. An energy delivery device as recited in claim 27, wherein said discharge circuit comprises an H-bridge circuit, and said plurality of switches comprises a pair of high switches and a pair of low switches, with said second switch being one of said high switches.

34. An energy delivery device as recited in claim 27, wherein said first shoot-through elimination circuit comprises:

a first shoot-through elimination resistor having a first shoot-through elimination resistor first end and a first shoot-through elimination resistor second end;

a second shoot through elimination resistor having a second shoot-through elimination resistor first end and a second shoot-through elimination resistor second end;

a third shoot-through elimination resistor having a third shoot-through elimination resistor first end and a third shoot-through elimination resistor second end;

a first shoot-through elimination diode having a first shoot-through elimination cathode and a first shoot-through elimination diode anode; and

a first shoot-through elimination switch having a first shoot-through elimination switch input end and a first shoot-through elimination switch output end,

wherein said first shoot-through elimination resistor first end is electrically connected to a control terminal of said first switch;

said first shoot-through elimination resistor second end is electrically connected to said first shoot-through elimination diode cathode end, said second shoot-through elimination resistor first end and to said first shoot-through elimination switch input end;

said first shoot-through elimination diode anode end is electrically connected to said third shoot-through elimination resistor first end;

said second shoot-through elimination resistor second end is electrically connected to said third shoot-through elimination resistor first end and to a control terminal of said first shoot-through elimination switch; and

said third shoot-through elimination resistor second end and said first shoot-through elimination switch output end are electrically connected to an input end of said second switch,

wherein said second shoot-through elimination circuit comprises;

a fourth shoot-through elimination resistor having a fourth shoot-through elimination resistor first end and a fourth shoot-through elimination resistor second end;

a fifth shoot through elimination resistor having a fifth shoot-through elimination resistor first end and a fifth shoot-through elimination resistor second end;

a sixth shoot-through elimination resistor having a sixth shoot-through elimination resistor first end and a sixth shoot-through elimination resistor second end;

a second shoot-through elimination diode having a second shoot-through elimination cathode and a second shoot-through elimination diode anode; and

a second shoot-through elimination switch having a second shoot-through elimination switch input end and a second shoot-through elimination switch output end,

and wherein;

said fourth shoot-through elimination resistor first end is electrically connected to a control terminal of said second switch;

said fourth shoot-through elimination resistor second end is electrically connected to said second shoot-through elimination diode cathode end, said fifth shoot-through elimination resistor first end and to said second shoot-through elimination switch input end;

said second shoot-through elimination diode anode end is electrically connected to said sixth shoot-through elimination resistor first end;

said fifth shoot-through elimination resistor second end is electrically connected to said sixth shoot-through elimination resistor first end and to a control terminal of said second shoot-through elimination switch;

said sixth shoot-through elimination resistor second end and said second shoot-through elimination switch output end are electrically connected to an input end of said first switch.
