Abstract

Embodiments include a system for determining cardiovascular information for a patient. The system may include at least one computer system configured to receive patient-specific data regarding a geometry of the patient'"'"'s heart, and create a three-dimensional model representing at least a portion of the patient'"'"'s heart based on the patient-specific data. The at least one computer system may be further configured to create a physics-based model relating to a blood flow characteristic of the patient'"'"'s heart and determine a fractional flow reserve within the patient'"'"'s heart based on the three-dimensional model and the physics-based model.

Claims

1. A system for determining cardiovascular information for a patient, the system comprising:

at least one computer system configured to;

receive patient-specific data regarding a geometry and at least one material property of at least a portion of an anatomical structure of the patient, the anatomical structure including at least a portion of a blood vessel;

create a three-dimensional model representing at least the portion of the anatomical structure of the patient based on the patient-specific data;

determine information regarding a blood flow characteristic within the anatomical structure of the patient based on the three-dimensional model and a physiological condition of the patient; and

identify a location of a plaque within the blood vessel in the three-dimensional model.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to determine at least one of a stress, a pressure, a force, or a strain on the plaque.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to assess a vulnerability of the plaque to rupture.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to assess the vulnerability of the plaque to rupture based on a ratio of a stress on the plaque over a strength of the plaque.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein:

the strength is determined based on a material property of the plaque; and

the stress includes acute or cumulative stress due to a hemodynamic force or cardiac motion-induced strain on the plaque.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the physiological condition of the patient includes at least one of a cardiac output, a heart rate, a stroke volume, a blood pressure, a level of exercise or exertion, a level of hyperemia, or a medication for the patient.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the location is identified by the at least one computer system or based on input from a user.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the anatomical structure includes at least a portion of a plurality of coronary arteries emanating from the patient'"'"'s aorta.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the blood flow characteristic includes at least one of a blood pressure, a blood velocity, or a blood flow rate; and

the at least one computer system is further configured to calculate at least one of a pressure, a force, or a shear stress acting on the plaque based on at least one of the determined blood pressure, blood velocity, or blood flow rate.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein:

the anatomical structure includes plurality of blood vessels downstream from the plaque; and

the at least one computer system is further configured to determine at least one potential path through at least one of the blood vessels downstream of the plaque for at least a portion of the plaque if the plaque ruptures.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to determine a probability for each of the blood vessels downstream of the plaque that at least the portion of the plaque flows into the respective blood vessel if the plaque ruptures.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to identify a location in at least one of the blood vessels downstream of the plaque where at least the portion of the plaque is predicted to create an impediment to flow.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the anatomical structure includes at least a portion of a plurality of arteries and myocardial tissue connected to at least the portion of the plurality of arteries, the plurality of arteries including the blood vessel including the plaque.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to identify a portion of the myocardial tissue supplied by the blood vessel.

15. The system of claim 13, wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to determine an amount of volume of the myocardial tissue affected if the plaque ruptures.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to determine the amount of volume of the myocardial tissue affected if the plaque ruptures based on at least one of (i) a size of the plaque or (ii) a size of at least one of the arteries downstream of the plaque.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to:

determine a probability that at least a portion of the plaque flows into the at least one artery downstream of the plaque if the plaque ruptures, and

determine the amount of volume of the myocardial tissue affected if the plaque ruptures based further on the determined probability.

18. The system of claim 13, wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to determine a reduction in blood flow to the myocardial tissue if the plaque ruptures.

19. A method for determining cardiovascular information for a patient using at least one computer system, the method comprising:

receiving, using at least one computer system, patient-specific data regarding a geometry and at least one material property of at least a portion of an anatomical structure of the patient, the anatomical structure including at least a portion of a blood vessel;

creating, using the at least one computer system, a three-dimensional model representing at least the portion of the anatomical structure of the patient based on the patient-specific data;

determining, using the at least one computer system, information regarding a blood flow characteristic within the anatomical structure of the patient based on the three-dimensional model and a physiological condition of the patient; and

identifying, using the at least one computer system, a plaque within the blood vessel in the three-dimensional model.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the plaque is identified by the at least one computer system or based on input from a user.

21. The method of claim 19, further comprising calculating at least one of a pressure, a force, or a shear stress acting on a surface of the plaque.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the at least one of pressure, force, or shear stress is calculated based on the determined information regarding the blood flow characteristic.

23. The method of claim 19, wherein the blood flow characteristic includes at least one of a blood pressure, a blood velocity, or a blood flow rate.

24. The method of claim 19, wherein the patient-specific data includes time-varying data regarding the geometry of at least the portion of the anatomical structure of the patient at different times, and the method further comprises:

determining information regarding deformation of at least one of the blood vessel or the plague over time.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the information regarding deformation over time includes at least one of a change in longitudinal dimension, twisting, a change in radial dimension, or bending of the at least one of the blood vessel or the plaque.

26. The method of claim 25, further comprising determining at least one of stress or strain of the plaque based on the deformation information using the at least one computer system.

27. A non-transitory computer readable medium for use on a computer system containing computer-executable programming instructions for performing a method for determining cardiovascular information for a patient, the method comprising:

receiving patient-specific data regarding a geometry and at least one material property of at least a portion of an anatomical structure of the patient, the anatomical structure including at least a portion of a blood vessel;

creating a three-dimensional model representing at least the portion of the anatomical structure of the patient based on the patient-specific data;

determining information regarding a blood flow characteristic within the anatomical structure of the patient based on the three-dimensional model and a physiological condition of the patient; and

identifying a location of a plaque within the blood vessel in the three-dimensional model.

28. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 27, wherein the anatomical structure includes at least a portion of a plurality of arteries and tissue connected to at least a portion of the plurality of arteries, and the method further comprises:

identifying a tissue segment of the anatomical structure affected by a potential rupture of the plaque.

29. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 28, the method further comprising determining a potential path for the plaque after the potential rupture.

30. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 28, the method further comprising determining whether the tissue segment is capable of being affected by the potential rupture of the plaque based on at least one of a size of the plaque or a size of at least a portion of the blood vessel downstream from the plaque.

31. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 28, the method further comprising providing a visual indicator for each one of a plurality of tissue segments, each visual indicator indicating a probability of affecting the respective tissue segment by the potential rupture of the plaque.

32. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 27, wherein the anatomical structure includes at least a portion of a plurality of arteries and tissue connected to at least a portion of the plurality of arteries, and the method further comprises:

determining a change in a blood flow to at least a portion of the tissue due to a potential rupture of the plaque.
