1. A sensor system for inserting an analyte sensor in a host is provided, the system comprising:
- a sensor adapted for transcutaneous insertion into a host'"'"'s skin;

an applicator configured to insert the sensor through the housing and into the skin of the host; and
an electronics unit configured to releasably mate with the housing, wherein the applicator is configured to releasably mate with the housing, and wherein the applicator is configured to automatically release from the housing responsive to an operable connection of the sensor with the electronics unit.
