1. A method comprising:
- receiving, at an interrogating call state control function, a message comprising a user identity;
querying, by the interrogating call state control function, at least one of a subscriber location function and a home subscriber server for a serving call state control function associated with the user identity;
receiving, from the at least one of the subscriber location function and the home subscriber server, an indication that the user identity is unknown; and
forwarding, by the interrogating call state control function, the message to a gateway separate from any serving call state control function, wherein the message is forwarded in response to receiving the indication that the user identity is unknown.

Address information is obtained for one of an application server, server or gateway for which said message is intended. The message is sent to said application server, server or gateway in accordance with said address information.
