Relaying system and method with partner relays and selective transmission
First Claim
1. A relay for use with a partner relay in a wireless transmission system, the wireless transmission system comprising at least one base station transceiver and at least one mobile station transceiver and having a first set of transmission resources allocated for forward link transmissions from the at least one base station to the at least one mobile station and a second set of transmission resources allocated for reverse link transmissions from at least one mobile station to the base station to the at least one base station, the relay comprising:
- a first receiver operable to receive a first signal on a first transmission resource in the first set of resources;
a first transmission resource translator operable to translate the first signal from the first transmission resource to a second transmission resource in the second set of transmission resources to provide a translated first signal;
a first transmitter operable to transmit the translated first signal on the second transmission resource;
a second receiver operable to receive a second signal on a third transmission resource in the second set of resources;
a second transmission resource translator operable to translate the second signal from the third transmission resource to a fourth transmission resource in the first set of transmission resources to provide a translated second signal; and
a second transmitter operable to transmit the translated second signal on the second transmission resource.

Abstract
Partner relay systems and methods are provided in which relaying is performed by a pair of partner relays. Signals received from a base station are translated by a first of the pair of partner relays to a different transmission resource for communication between the pair of partner relays, and then upon reception by a second of the pair of partner relays, the signal is translated back to the original transmission resource and re-transmitted towards the receiver.

21. A method of relaying a signal at a particular modulation rate from a first transceiver to a second transceiver in a wireless communication network, the second transceiver being unable to receive the signal directly from the first transceiver at the particular modulation rate, the method comprising:
-
receiving from the first transceiver at a first relay the signal at the particular modulation rate on a first wireless transmission resource; translating the signal at the particular modulation rate on the first transmission resource to a second transmission resource at the first relay; transmitting the signal at the particular modulation rate on the second transmission resource to a second relay; translating the signal at the particular modulation rate on the second transmission resource to the first transmission resource at the second relay; and transmitting the signal at the particular modulation rate on the first transmission resource to the second transceiver, whereby the second transceiver is able to receive the signal at the particular modulation rate.
