1. A multicellular stent comprising:

  • a plurality of first circumferential bands containing loops and struts occurring at a frequency;

    a plurality of second circumferential bands containing loops and struts also occurring at said frequency, said loops being 180 degrees out of phase with the loops of the first circumferential band, said second circumferential bands alternating with said first circumferential bands for at least two repetitions;

    a plurality of first flexible compensating members having a first end, a second end and a loop there between, each member having a width and a length, said first end connected to a loop of a first circumferential band and said second end connected to a longitudinally aligned loop of an adjacent second circumferential band, wherein a first cell is formed from two adjacent first flexible compensating members connected to the longitudinally adjacent loops of said first and second circumferential bands to form a first band of square cells that extends in a pattern of uniform cells around the circumference of the stent;

    a plurality of second flexible compensating members having a first end and a second end containing loops, each member having a width and a length, said first end connected to a loop of a second circumferential band and said second end connected to a longitudinally offset loop of an adjacent first circumferential band, wherein each second flexible member comprises a first straight portion with a first end and a second end, a second straight portion with a first end and second end, and a third straight portion with a first end and a second end, wherein the longitudinal axis of each said portion lies generally aligned with the longitudinal axis of the stent;

    wherein a second cell different from the first cell is formed from two adjacent second flexible compensating members connected to the longitudinally adjacent loops of said first and second circumferential bands to form a second band of square cells that extends in a pattern of uniform cells around the circumference of the stent;

    said struts of the first and second circumferential bands are wider than the width of at least one of the first and second flexible compensating members.
